The whole "if you can't afford to buy it outright then you can't afford it" argument is a load of crap.
I quite agree, there are probably plenty of people who could afford to buy a car outright but prefer a deal. That means that some, obviously, can't. So you are incorrect when you imply anyone who can afford repayments on a car could afford it outright.

I have said quite the opposite, must be a misunderstanding. I have said that many people couldn't afford it outright, but can afford the repayments. I am saying that being able to afford the repayments means they can afford it.....so I'm basically saying that as long as you can afford the repayments then you can afford it, whether or not you can or can't afford to buy it outright.

I think we're actually in agreement, but perhaps I wasn't clear enough.

I quite like the exterior styling, it's quite a handsome thing, but it just doesn't look in the slightest bit athletic. I'd say even something like the Continental does a better job as far as this is concerned. Not so keen on the interior to be honest. If you look at all of the details individually they don't look like they should be any less aesthetically pleasing than say a Panamera's interior, it's just when they are all put together it just doesn't work as a whole somehow.

I think that one was crossed wires guys! I'm definitely not dissing PCP as it can get you in a nicer car than your savings permit - whats not to love if this is your passion?! Its fair to question the value but that's a personal choice. The cashflow thing can be a positive too if you dont want to blow capital that could be used better elsewhere. PCP definitely got me in my Macan as I was a silly boy and went £15k over budget as I just had to have the f quick one having driven itbiggrin. Now the actual value was poor - reckon £100 a month binned in deferred interest. However, life is short and it got me in the car and a year later (yesterday!), as the capital due got to a reasonable level, I paid off the PCP with a straight loan at 2.8% - the dealer's 6.9% on a secured loan is such a terrible deal (albeit I had sweeteners) but its great business for them. But I knew all that and am a very happy bunny smile

About to swap my 2 1/2 year old 15,000 X5 M and the We Buy Any Car valuation is £41,500 vs. paying around £90,000 new (after discount).

I knew it was going to be a depreciation nightmare and it’s a great car, but herein lies the challenge with BMWs (all mine have done the same thing).

I do like the look of this M8, but it’s clearly going to be a £50k car very quickly. A similar priced 911 Turbo is a different ball game financially.
Mines doubled in value in 7 years.

For those PH'ers forecasting 20% discounts in 6 months time on these 8-series, a big northern dealer network (with initials AC) currently has the M850i with £16767 "deposit contribution" and an "additional £2500 for your trade in" for the next week, so 19% off already on PCP (No numbers up for the M8 yet)

The 840d has an even bigger percentage off with £16544 incentives meaning nearly 22% off on PCP

Got to say the 840d looks much better at approx £61k new, but will still be sub £40k in 2 years

In other words, it's where the 6 Series was 3-5 years ago.

Are you using the RRP prices of the 6, or the discounted prices that were inevitably available for the 6 as well?

Will never be sub 40 in 2 years, current year old run out 640d’s are just about sub 40. I would have bought an 18 month old (max) 640d if they were available for 30k! I saved 6k and bought a Civic Type R instead biggrin, best decision of my life

I got mocked when I said I’m having more fun in the jcw than the m3 comp. less is more!

M4/C63 were meant to be my replacement, numbers just about worked however I knew it wasn’t a smart decision so settled for a lower budget, couldn’t find anything decent but I wasn’t looking in the right places, thank god I didn’t get the M4/C63, I wouldn’t have had anywhere near as much fun!!

This is the new reality. Sadly. They just make up the RRP's on these Bimmers and offer 10% off and we are hooked in. Their leather is awful and sprayed with thick plastic and the parts are so common between entry level and top of the range. Great business model.

I got £17k off a pre reg loaded 535d thinking I was being sharp and killing the depreciation a lot before it started. I was getting offers of £25k on a £42k car after 14 months 14,000. 40%. They ALL knew! It was a plot wink It would have been a bit more OK a few months into year 2 maybe...

They just know what they are doing and its quite canny, and I wouldn't touch them with a barge-pole now, probably! Its just business though and is kind to the second owner of a 'bargain' i8 currently smile
Eh? 50% ish depreciation after 3 years is the rule of thumb for any car and has been for a Long Time (ignoring the low numbers specials) so yep no different from any other car or manufacturer. If you want to sell a new car after 14 months then more fool you I say as you surely expect to be fked over? FFS this place rolleyes
