RE: BMW 1M | Rise
Discussion
I bought an old 135i convertible, it gets worse...auto for a bit of summer fun after the big XFR. Got it at the right money with the same engine as the 1M which takes to a remap like mothers milk. I didn't know much about these and the wealth of enthusiasts and information available. Not vaguely trying to put it in the same league except for the value for money. Fairly low expectations helped and a remap really helped but it's an ginuinely fast and pointy thing and that's with the roof loped off and poormans suspension. I've had a few bargains in my time and expect a few bills but this has been a revelation for me when I was just out to tick the soft top box. I'd love to try the real deal.

My local dealer just valued mine at £60k as full service history!
Would he put his money where his mouth is and buy it off you for that ? There’s a 9k mile one on sale at a dealer for £45k ...which I’d assume he paid less than that for
They seem to range from 36,000 Euros up to about 70,000 Euros on there - lot more cars for sale obviously

Am I the only one who thinks they’re not ugly? Whilst it might not be as handsome as something like the E46, I still think it looks purposeful and imposing. The compact size and flared arches look bang on.
I like the shape but this from a man who likes Panameras so take with a pinch of salt. Jaroon said:

I distinctly remember mine. I'd just sold the 997.1 GT3 and wanted something a little more practical as a daily. I found the experience utterly underwhelming.
The handling character at the limit was very spiky. The traction control was always eager to interject. There was no shortcut to M-Dynamic Mode like in other M cars so it required some fiddling to get it to back off the TC. It was overall a pleasant car to own but didn't come anywhere near the character, handling, pace, or presence of the GT3. And nor should it. It's not an apples to apples comparison by any means. Just know that despite the vid, there are other waaaay more exciting cars for the money. A nicely depreciated E92 M3 for example.
BMW M cars since the E30 are known to be spiky at the limit and the 1M's short wheelbase would only exaggerate it. For me preditable behaviour at and beyond limit is what differenciates good performance cars from truly great ones so it's not a car I'd put my money on. I have to admit it sounds quite ferocious in the right way though, trubo'd or not...The handling character at the limit was very spiky. The traction control was always eager to interject. I guess the short wheelbase to width would explain the GT2 RS spiky behaviour as well - it's even more square than the 1M! Seems to be a big demand even secondhand for both

I was one of the lucky 450 back in 2011. I managed to confirm my slot a few days before the Sunday Top Gear Clarkson review (he raved about it) which saw it immediately sell out the day after on the Monday.
Mine was a basic spec, no options, just some BMWP pedals and kidney grills. I didn't want the 'cut-out' in the dash for the nav as it was going to be a low milage weekend and short commute car.
When I ordered I got a bit of a discount (£2k from memory) and I got back what I paid for it 12months later, when I was going through a possible redundancy, which eventually didn't happen. I have regretted the sale ever since. No other car I've owned has evoked so much feedback, enjoyment and pleasure. A truly epic car for me on so many levels. It punched way above it's class (I fondly remember absolutely destroying a 997.2 one sunny afternoon in Wiltshire). A bit squirrely sometimes, but that was part of the fun, the MPS's really do dig deep and give untold amounts of grip when needed.
If there's one comment I would make, no matter what picture or video you look at, it cannot demonstrate how pumped up and angry these cars are in the metal. The rear stance is almost jacked-up on it's haunches, and I love that they are a skunkworks build that was done just because they could. M parts bin special, who cares, they are still M parts off good M cars and the N54 twin-turbo means it has punch the N55 can only dream of.
I drove an M2 a while back, and it didn't come close to the enjoyment the 1M gave me. It felt dull in comparison. The 1M felt alive, it was an event every time I got in it, it evoked a grin, it was always keen and eager. God I miss it, and I promised myself I'd get another one day.
It's interesting because the majority of negativity the car gets is normally from people who've never lived with on or have only test driven one. I don't think I've met or heard an owner who didn't feel the same as me, after a period of ownership where you can get to know the car.
I think the negativity comes from different people's expectation. Nowadays, we are so spoilt with "perfect" driving control due to electronic trickery that anything less than "perfect" makes some people say "well, it has it's faults so I don't know why you would pay that money for one when you could get [X] for that price".Mine was a basic spec, no options, just some BMWP pedals and kidney grills. For me, when Harris uses words like "old school", "heavy clutch", "feel and connection from hydraulic steering", "a decent shift in a manual gearbox". This just really drives my desire to want one. I know it's not perfect, it may bite, I may not have as much confidence in driving one because it is "spiky" but as someone else said, it becomes a "cult classic".
