I kind of agree with you.I've owned mine from new and almost sold it after 2 years.
I was never 100% happy with the car straight out of the box, it drove OK but yes felt very generic so I decided to start fettling it and then see how I felt.
So Akrapovic exhaust, coilover suspension, performance seats, forge intercooler, uprated charge pipe, 18inch wheels and a proper geo later has turned it into a very different car and one I would never part with.

Would love to share my lightly enhanced Z4M with PH for a rise and drive. It’s worth getting up for.
Only if you enjoy a terrible ride and an obstructive gearbox! I know both issues can be vastly improved over the standard car though.

One of the best cars to ever come from the M Division. Makes a lot of sense why people say the M2 is the modern day equivalent of these, and they weren't exactly that old in the first place. If I had the money and this was solely a car for fun, the 1M would be what I would take over an M2, as it does have much less electronic fettling. But as a daily it would be the M2, as they aren't cars that are appreciating.
Reading the comparison in latest EVO this morning of the 1M with M2 Comp - ended with him saying the 1M was the one he’d want to drive againI've got a 135i coupe with many of the mods discussed by a few others.
The whole thing cost around 20k.
There is quite a lot that needs doing but the end result is truly awesome. It has less grip than the 1m with its narrower track and tyres but I prefer that. There is fun to be had at sane ish speeds.
Recipe:
-135i with the n54 and manual box
-B1 Suspension from Birds, Springs dampers and arbs
-Quaife lsd from Birds
-Finned diff cover from 650i
-1M / M3 suspension links front and rear
-1M / M3 Rear subframe bushes
-1M / M3 Firewall to front strut tower brace
-Decatted downpipes (still retains center cat so MOT friendly)
-Larger intercooler
-1 Step colder spark plugs
-F10 550i clutch
-e46 m3 rear transmission mounts
-MHD stage 2+ remap
It's truly a lot of fun!
The power is brutal, There is 650N/M of torque from very low revs. It makes a v8 m3 feel slow.
The handling and ride is really well resolved especially for uk roads. Birds really know what they are doing.
Being on 18s instead of 19s helps as well.
And for around half the cost of a 1m I'm really pleased with it.
I do love the look of the wide arches though.
