I had one of these for a couple of years I must say it was a lovely car.

I actually chose it over a Cayman s because it actually felt nicer inside with the Porsche feeling a bit bland and with the dsg it was a lovely drive and v quick on the track days I did.

I am looking at buying another car and this is on the list again with fully loaded 2017 cars with low miles are a bargain at just over 20k

I had the facelift model for a couple of years. It was great fun to drive and pretty quick. Did have traction issues in the wet though.

I do take issue with the claim made in the article that mini SUV/crossovers have eliminated the market for coupes. Not true at all.

Yes, mini SUV/crossovers have become very popular, but not with real driving enthusiasts. They are a trendy lifestyle choice, not a dynamic choice for focussed drivers.

A coupe (done right) will always have a strong market among real driving enthusiasts. At this point, some of those reading this are asking, what about the GT86 - that didn't sell well. True. But it had the wrong engine and wasn't all that quick. The BMW M1/235/40i coupe and hatchback has sold like hotcakes. And, of course, these are known to be at least quite focussed drivers cars, especially the coupe. But the real proof that sports coupes are anything but dead, is a statistic I heard about the Ford Mustang. A couple of years or so ago, I think either 2016 or 2017, I read that the Mustang was the best selling sports car that year in the UK. I would've said MX5, but no. Mustang. Back to basics, hairy chested, crude but effective coupe.

It was one of these that got me into the whole VW thing (prior to that I was all about Jap cars).

The seating position felt nice and low, the doors solid... heck the whole thing solid. And it went like stink (I know, these things are relative).

So much so that after I sold it, I went back a few days later and tried to buy it back from the dealer. I was 1 day too late frown

Mine was black, I thought it looked suitably mean.:

I have a GT and love it. I’m going to be in the market for a new car very soon, possibly my first ever new car, and as one of these is not available am in a real predicament. Yes it’s flawed, but no more so than any other car I’ve driven or owned.

I had a facelifted one, excellent car in every way except the leather seats were as comfortable as a church pew.

It never did get under my skin though.

I forget the packaging reason why it wasn't AWD like the Golf R, but it always struck me as a bit of a product planning fail.

Whether it affected sales I've no idea.

Had an R for the last two years on lease from VW and love it. After 20,000 miles it's still like new, very comfortable (the standard adjustable suspension is brilliant) and very quick across country. Being an eighties child I had original hot hatches including 205 1.9 GTi etc. The Scirocco R is so old school. High power front wheel drive manual etc with a good dollop of torque steer in the wet. Wheel spin at 60mph in the wet is entertaining!

The car goes back to VW on Thursday and I'll miss it. I could have handed it back a couple of months ago for just a £300 penalty and taken delivery of a new A35 AMG. Instead I've hung on to the Scirocco R to the very last moment - leaving the A35 gathering dust in the Mercedes compound. I just love the old school character of a powerful front wheel drive manual hot hatch.

Don't look at the Scirocco R as a squashed Golf GTi - it's so much more! Mine will undoubtedly be auctioned by VW finance by the end of the month. Someone is going to get a brilliant car. Me - stuck in a fast, safe but ever so slightly dull new hot hatch - with a lump in my throat whenever I see an R go by .....

Never been too big into these in particular, but I miss cheap coupes based on the same platforms as more conventional stuff. I think the Scirocco was the last one standing.

If you were in the market for a VAG product, surely you’d buy their best, a TT??

The Scirocco leaves me cold. Ugly, dull and deservedly cheap second hand.

Often follow a blue one of these into town on my early morning gym-run.
It runs slightly wider wheels which really suit, but I’m always drawn to the two little appendages on the rear of the roof; it looks like when they were designing the car, they forgot to put in space for the tailgate hinges and frantically amended it just before slapping the final design in front of Bernd Pischetsrieder...

Lots of last of the line lease deals from Feb/march 2018 will be coming on the used car market in about 8 months time.

I have one, it was mega cheap and a decent car for £250 a month.

I wanted to like these but they just don't look 'right' in the flesh IMO, the squashed view from the rear especially.

Also sad to see the demise of another 3dr hatch.
Seems joe public wants an SUV behemoth these days......
The Scirocco factory now makes T-Rocs, which I think proves your last point.

But the Scirocco soldiered on for too long and I never saw any appeal over a 3 door Golf GTI, even more so when its based on 2 generation ago under pinnings.

Sad to see so few buying a coupe these days.

You can hardly blame VW for binning it.

They should have furnished the Scirocco with its own, sporty interior. The standard issue dash and steering wheel make the cabin into a normal car. No sense of occasion. Pass.
It is a normal car, with a very normal price tag. All it's competitors would have run of the mill interiors. Let's be realistic here rolleyes

OT: I think these look great and are aging very well, if they did them with the underpinnings and engine of the Golf R 7 I would have had one over the Golf in a heartbeat.

There's a lightly modded one local to me and it is very pretty. Looks similar to this:-

I test drove one of these years ago, the dealer just handed me the keys and told me to come back when I was ready which was very strange.

Hilarious thing to drive though, lots of power and loads of grip thanks to the pseudo-diff. It wouldn’t understeer no matter what you did.

Didn’t buy it though because it was £24k and that felt a bit steep at the time.

It's just a shame VW didn't update the chassis like with the Golf. A MKII or III based of the Golf MK7 chassis along with 300bhp and AWD would have surely kept the Scricco going.

With Audi rumoured to discontinue it's TT at the end of this models life cycle, then VAG won't have any small coupe's in it's line up.

I see this mentioned a lot on PH about the chassis being 2 generations behind.

What real difference does this make to an average owner on the road? Because I regularly drive a Leon 290 and a 18 plate Scirocco R and I'm not sure it's that much.

Same with the engine. All this talk about ea888 vs ea113. Truth be told IMO there is hardly anything in engine performance or economy or chassis that I think it's worthy of discounting the older over the newer.

I actually think the dynamic chassis in the Scirocco seems to offer more of a change per driving mode that the newer chassis.

Also, given that the Mk6 is a Mk5 chassis, isn't it only one generation behind?

We don't say an E36 M3 isn't worth entertaining because it's now 3 generations old. So what gives?
