Are there many improvements from Mk1 to Mk2?

Always much preferred the look of the Mk1 & I can't be the only one who isn't a fan of the arches can I?!

Honest question: Can someone explain to me why an ancient ford chassis is so desirable?
If you haven’t driven one, you don’t know. If you have, you do....
Good point. Drove a 1600 at a rally school and have been in love ever since. So easy to take up to the limit, over, then back again.

If I had the cash I'd be putting a deposit down right now.

"Cooking versions of the rear-driven coupe are widely acknowledged as some of the Blue Oval’s finest driving machines "

Not sure if I should be handing in my PH card here, but does "cooking versions" not mean the crappest versions of something that you would use for cooking? Like cooking chocolate or wine or whatever.

In bellend car parlance I take it to mean "warm" versions of models, or the more performance orientated in the range.

I have driven one, on gravel. Very fun to slide but not special in any way. Feels like any other rwd from the era. A regular 924 smash it it every way as a drivers car. However the after market is massive, they are being built into every kind of spec possible, and all the other reasons for some cars to be expensive and some not smile

I second this definition.

The mk2 RS variants were anything but cooking models...

Yes, I’ve always taken it to mean the cheapest/crappiest in the range.

No, both Car magazine and Clarkson both use it to mean the most basic in the range and that was just from 2 mins on google. That is certainly the traditional meaning.

The Lotto garage has a fully-restored Mk2 Escort in it - amongst countless other things - so this looks like just what I'm after instead when the numbers come up.

I've always taken it to mean warm/hot, so a 'cooking' version of the Focus would be an ST/RS. scratchchin

Been to GBS a few times on their open mornings, only ever seen the Lotus 7 style kits though. rotate

Who writes this bks? its a two door saloon, not a coupe.
A 2 door saloon is pretty-much the definition of a coupe...

In a world gone mad with every company thinking they're a Singer reinvented, this is quite a bargain if you can have this on the road for £60k.
But presumably no chance of getting it road registered?

Can you define the difference please?
Other than the fact that Ford itself called it that you mean?

Cooking means sub-standard so if you have the uprated versions, the cooking model will be the boring one you can buy in the showroom. So if sherry isn't good enough to drink, it is used in cooking so is cooking sherry. Same with chocolate - inedible unless used in cooking to spice/razz it up.

While the Escort was good, dynamically, when imbued with appropriate power and upgrades, the standard ones were as dull as dishwater in every department. Ford didn't need to develop the basic model as everyone made dull, tedious RWD cars in the 70s.
