12 years and not yet on the road! I think that would drive me mad. I get upset if one isn’t driveable and need to get it back on the road as quickly as financially possible. That being said bodywork is another issue - I have a couple needing some proper painting and dent removal but I can live with that for now.

I think it depends but it can certainly be both.

I sold 7 long term "project cars" a few years ago when I realised most were now in a worse state than when I got them and that I wasn't going to get around to them - whilst I had second thoughts when advertising them I felt a weight had been lifted when they'd all gone.

I also had around 20 more.

I'm trying to reduce them down to around 5 because otherwise I spend too much time just maintaining / cleaning them rather than getting out and using them.

A mate simply cannot sell a car, he has loads and none of them work so he now leases a car too !

I am back up to being a 5 car family since the weekend. Love them all and very different driving experiences:

- Caterham Superlight
- Elise S1 Sport 160
- BMW E36 328 - "Clubsport" spec
- Forester STI
- Nissan Note Auto (the wife's)
If you had to choose between the caterham and the Elise (as a fun only car), which would you choose and why? They’re both on my list as contenders for 3rd car...
Elise as it's more usable more of the time -
It is all the car you need in many ways and van really do it all. Having lots of cars becomes a pain if you just don't use one/a few of them.

However, they are very different drives and ultimately on the right road on the right day, the Seven is possibly the bigger hit.

My Elise is however far from standard and is as hardcore as a Caterham which helps the decision. If it was a standard Seven vs a standard Elise, then the Caterham would probably take it. There are lots of different Elise/Caterham specs which does mean that few cars are the same.

Definitely go for a test drive in both, ideally on a rainy day to help make your mind up.
Thanks for the info. Usability isn’t a concern, but I will definitely try both. I’m tempted by the new shape europa as well, but there doesn’t seem to be any for sale! Just love the shape, although I realise it’s a very different proposition.

I’m not too bad:

1) Freelander 2 - family car
2) ND MX-5 RF - partners, but I get to steal it
3) Anglia 105e race car (for when 100e breaks)
4) Anglia 100e race car (for when 105e breaks)

Currently thinking of a caterham or Elise. Or a ginetta g15, probably the latter.

Nowhere near as bad as my dad, who, for example, at one time owned 5 NSU TT’s and 10 Austin 7’s.

Well this a reassuring thread... I was beginning to think I had a problem. A very enjoyable problem!
Here’s my current list...

Lexus LS 430 2001 (Daily driver, motorway commuting)

TVR Chimaera 500 1997 (weekend toy 1)

Mercedes SL 55 AMG ( for when I need to do 200mph and have a massage simultaneously )

Porsche 911 (996) Carrera 2 ( every one’s got to own a 911 once right?)

Renault Clio turbo diesel 2003 ( spare stter, makeshift van, temporary storage, surprisingly quick!!)

Toyota Carina 1.8 GLX 1996 ( spare stter number 2, slight comedy value)

Bedford Bambi “motorhome” ( when you want a camper van but also need something “cute” so the mrs doesn’t mind.)

Nissan S Cargo 1989 ( Humourous novelty van, business promotion tool)

Mk5 Transit Recovery truck 1996 (so I can continue to buy EBay stters, and childish urge to have a big truck)

VW bay window camper thing 1977 (it’s got a cool hydraulic opening roof, the ultimate aim to turn into a bar for corporate events)

That’s my mini fleet.. I’m starting to run out of space but there’s still room for some more.... I’ve got a hankering for an old school Skoda Estelle for some strange reason...

Some really decent fleets in this thread, very reassuring too as i'm regularly told i have too many cars. I'm lucky enough to be able to rent a double garage + a small yard so have space to work on them in peace.

Currently have
BMW E60 M5
BMW E34 M5 3.6
MX5 NA Track car
Peugeot 406 tip car

Just sold the E39 540i Sport which freed up some useful space.

Looking at adding another one at some point, can't decide between an old Alfa S2, an old Porsche or an E24 M635csi if a decent one comes along...

I have too many cars frankly.

And when threads like this come along, wonder how much time and money I would have saved over the years if I’d just had one car at a time.

Phew, I felt them same and hadn't seen a thread like this on here!

Quite some collection of fine steeds you have there!

Fortunately/Unfortunately the GF has a bigger problem then me and it's her cars clogging up the drive/garage rather than mine! biggrin

1. BMW X5 m50d - Daily/load & people lugger - Needed something newish for work allowance criteria and a Tucson/Sorento just wouldn't do.
2. Boxster 986 3.2s - Fun daily and new everyday project she bought on a whim whilst I was away with work. Don't need it, but she did good.
3. Honda Insight Gen 1 - Daily not being used much and soon to be sold frown
4. 944 S2 in Peridot Green biggrin - Just because awesome.
5. Integra Type-R (DC2) - Hidden in garage and neglected. Hopefully back on the road in Sep.
6. Cortina Mk3 GXL - Her barge that does nothing other than tootle to static shows (I want this gone so the DC2 can get the garage space back once the 944 steals this spot).

Just sold - Honda SMX wrapped JDM box toaster wagon of lol.

Had these last 12/18months:
- Nissan Murano LPG - Sold to my dad - X5 replaced it. Epic car in metallic red with 50k miles and all the SUV you ever really need.
- Nissan Murano - First one before the LPG one came up locally.
- Some mk2.5 MX5s.
- Bella the 1998 Berlingo skip. Refurbed the whole interior of the house and large garden using only this as disposal. Sad to have to scrap her.
- Audi TT - VTd this thing, even though it was a cracking car.
- 350z - Nice car, especially in orange with the Rays. But not particularly special to drive.

Can I ask those of you with three cars plus what you do about insurance, assuming they are all in service and not off road for various reasons? Do you just go for a standard policy on each or multicar policy or is there something else I'm missing?

I currently have 2 cars both insured in my name with separate policies but I'm planning on potentially adding a third at some point.

Thanks

For me I insure the toys and the classics on a classic multi car policy... limited to 3k mikes per year and agreed valuations. Costs me £1k for TVR/911/AMG and camper van....
Then I have a separate traders insurance policy which allows me to insure 3 permanent day to day vehicles (including recovery truck) and then I can add and remove whatever vehicles I need to this as and when.
This costs approx £1100

Who does this for you - I've not found someone who will do this for classics....?

For the record my list is:

Alfa 3.2 litres:

166 3.2 - "the limo" - bought as a shell and transplanted the engine from a very rusty car. On the road
GT 3.2 - bought with a blownup engine, fixed. On the road
156 GTA 3.2 - bought very tired, mechanically spot on now, needs paint. On the road.

Alfa 3.0 litres

GTV - seemed interesting, needs attention from the MIG.

Alfa 2.5 Litres:

156 2.5, - The Roundabout Monster - bought nearly new, Q2, ARBs, B6s etc, On the road
156 2.4 Diesel - The Daily - bought for £270 unseen off eBay, currently doing 20k miles a year. On the road
156 2.5 - son's project car, not working.
155 2.5 - felt sorry for it, bought it. Utterly reliable and about to have working air con. On the road

Alfa 2.0 Litre

Alfetta GTV 2.0 - this is the one that started it. SORN, but MOTd

Other:

Land Rover Series III - shooting wagon. Used but not on the public highway
Land Rover Dedender 4.6 - tow car. On the road
Field Marshall S2 Tractor
Fergie TEA 20 Tractor
Dump Truck of indeterminate provenance.

Just the four, in order of miles per year...

Ford Escort van
Smart ForTwo convertible
BMW M Roadster
BMW E46 330 convertible

oh, I completely forgot...

Suzuki Wagon R+ at my mum's house. It used to be to take her out, but is sadly no longer required.
Re insurance...

M Roadster has lots of mods, so £400 for 6,000 miles.

Escort is for work, so it's covered for hire & reward, it's £800 for 10,000 miles.

E46 (4,000 miles), Smart (10,000 miles) and Wagon R (3,000 miles) are multicar at £550 the lot.

I pay the VED monthly just to keep the cashflow reasonable (it's 5% extra, but much better than 15% on monthly insurance)

Single policy. Each car has separate mileage limits, separate use, can have different driver combinations.

For a short time I had one more car than I was actually using. Soon realised it was a complete waste of time and money and sold it. Never regretted that decision.

Surplus cars are a PITA.
