I stopped counting when I blew past 50. Only problem so far is when I go to car shows. After telling the 4-5 person in a row that 'I have one these' , they all start thinking that i'm full of st.

Various European cars and a few American trucks, Some parts cars. Some parts cars for my parts cars smile
I keep a video blog on youtube of the various cars that I have bought and sold over the years. Most of them are projects, some actually got finished.

Who does this for you - I've not found someone who will do this for classics....?

For the record my list is:

Alfa 3.2 litres:

166 3.2 - "the limo" - bought as a shell and transplanted the engine from a very rusty car. On the road
GT 3.2 - bought with a blownup engine, fixed. On the road
156 GTA 3.2 - bought very tired, mechanically spot on now, needs paint. On the road.

Alfa 3.0 litres

GTV - seemed interesting, needs attention from the MIG.

Alfa 2.5 Litres:

156 2.5, - The Roundabout Monster - bought nearly new, Q2, ARBs, B6s etc, On the road
156 2.4 Diesel - The Daily - bought for £270 unseen off eBay, currently doing 20k miles a year. On the road
156 2.5 - son's project car, not working.
155 2.5 - felt sorry for it, bought it. Utterly reliable and about to have working air con. On the road

Alfa 2.0 Litre

Alfetta GTV 2.0 - this is the one that started it. SORN, but MOTd

Other:

Land Rover Series III - shooting wagon. Used but not on the public highway
Land Rover Dedender 4.6 - tow car. On the road
Field Marshall S2 Tractor
Fergie TEA 20 Tractor
Dump Truck of indeterminate provenance.
Got to admire the volume of ageing Italian tin (and electrics) - too hoarding.

Rather fancy the idea of a Field Marshall myself...,

This needs recognition. What a great collection of cars. You need to add a Land Rover forward control.

I was wondering where all the V6 Alfas were...this guy has half the number left on the road, probably!

I'd like a 3.2 166 or 2.5 156.

My paltry 3 going on 4 as me feeling a little like I'm not trying hard enough.

Work driver Jag XE-S
Sunny days Honda S2000
Classic time 74' MGB v8.

And because me and Mrs 51mes are planning an italian roadtrip next summer (loving the excuse)
I need to get back into an italian preferrably with a Busso V6 and a ragtop so the hunt is on for an alfa 916 spider,
the prices for anything with a Busso are heading ever upwards so need to get in while I still can.

I alos want to take the honda off the road for a while to give her some TLC.

Apart from the work driver the one rule I have is I'm not to loose money on what I buy, (the work driver is great for that).

It's a problem if you don't have space &/or money. Regardless, it's a passion.

12 years and not yet on the road! I think that would drive me mad. I get upset if one isn’t driveable and need to get it back on the road as quickly as financially possible. That being said bodywork is another issue - I have a couple needing some proper painting and dent removal but I can live with that for now.
It’s been a rolling resto so goes on the road in spring and I drive it until something brakes. Mechanically crap and leaks from every orifice. Affectionately known as 50 shades of red!

Hah - at one stage I think I owned close to 10% of the “running” 166 3.2s in the U.K. Unfortunately one was far too rotten to save... A lot have been scrapped for the engines - a working 3.2 with an ECU is worth three grand all day on a pallet.

Field-Marshall is indeed awesome. 2 stroke diesel, and no electrics at all. You either start it with a lit taper, or a blank shotgun cartridge.

I totally understand the reasoning behind that; a Stratos is in my top 10 cars of all time, and to have the chance to build one with the lovely Alfa 3.2..

But I can't help feeling these Alfas (GT, 166, 156) although FWD are quite special and already rare. I don't think I'd have the heart to rip out its, erm, heart.

Anyway back on topic, have we found the 'correct' number yet? I'm sticking with 7, covering all the bases - not too many, not too few.

Well I came up with 7 as it’s one for each day of the week. Bit arbitrary but not couldn’t think of another goal.

Honestly, I’d stick a 3.0 in. It’s a better engine in pretty much every respect other than outright power. It’s got all the crazy rev happy goodness of the 2.5, with nearly all of the torque of the 3.2. On throttle bodies, I doubt you’d notice the difference. If you just want a wall of power, then the 3.2 is good - but the 2.5 ( or 3, same crank) is more fun. There are loads of 3.0s kicking about, with none of the ECU and crank spares issues.

I’ve managed to keep my buying at a sensible level since child number 4 came along (3 months ago!), but having treated the Mrs to a Viano V6 I decided I needed a treat too....... so I’m renting an 80x40 unit to put my collection in, and have just bought a Holden Commodore SS to bring the numbers to a nice, round 10.

Opel Manta SR coupe
Opel Manta 1.8 GT
Opel Rekord van
Vauxhall Carlton 2.2 estate
Vauxhall Carlton 1.8 estate
Bedford CF SWB van
Bedford CF LWB van
Bedford CF SWB minibus
Vauxhall VX220 NA

Plus 11 bikes and associated spares, tools etc

Caterham 7 - built 1991, I sold it 12 years later and bought it back in 2015, rebuilt it. Covered 700 miles since April 2017.

TVR Chimaera - I bought this 2015, my 4th TVR and always thought it a keeper but....

Mercedes Benz SL500 (R129) - bought last week, been fancying one for a while and getting more impressed by it, by the a day. A successor to the TVR maybe.

Volvo 940 Estate - The car to go to for house renovation, holidays, supermarket, tip, it is the only car that I can get two dog cages in the back with 5 seats up front for holidays.

Wife has a Suzuki SX4, 4WD, higher for a person not too tall, decent on fuel, but not a massive SUV.

At the stage, with 3 two seater cars (the SL has two tiny seats in the rear) I think one has to go but which one?

Could I sell the Caterham again? It's easy to maintain, not practical, I might someday get back into hillclimbs but not a definite.

TVR: thought it a keeper but the SL does everything with great aplomb and is easier to get in and out and the roof, while a technical marvel as long as it is working, is so much better than the TVR in every respect. TVR has the look, the "British Man in Shed" look (quote from the MoT man) and the noise but I wouldn't want to do a 500 mile journey in it like I have just done in the SL. There again most of my trips are about 20 mile. Going anywhere long distance involves the family so it's the Volvo. The SL got a "nice car" comment in the petrol station, haven't had that for a while in the TVR.

Volvo, while exceptionally tidy and in really good health as well as totally practical, is probably not worth much with 190K on the clock.

Sell one of the two seaters, but which? I'd miss which ever, but the money might go towards a VW T4 or T5 day van/camper or a resto project of something that turns up or another dream car although TBH the Integrale, E30 M3 (had one when they weren't silly money), or E24 635csi) are more expensive than any of my current 2 seaters. A nice problem but an uncomfortable decision.

I’ve got a Chimaera and an SL55.

I’m happy with both of them. They were never in the same category and I’m not surprised the SL is ‘better’ in a lot of respects.
But I know which one I’d prefer to develop ‘a few technical issues’. hehe

Hi - have you worked out where to get the paint done, and how much it's going to cost. I'm currently looking into paint options for my 156 GTA....

I tried to PM you, but couldn't.

Im on 4 plus a company van, so 5 i suppose as that's also parked at home all the time.

I justify them as they all do different jobs, they are all paid for so are assets if we needed to find some cash for whatever reason can sell one, not tied into a lease like most of our friends are as that seems to be the trend now.

ohh and iv an understanding neighbour who lets me use their spare space on their drive.laugh

Company van is a 2013 Berlingo that does 600 miles a week on average, horrid thing but good on fuel to offset my mileage for boss.
2010 Focus ST, my summer toy, worked my arse off at 21 to buy it when it was a year old, 2 months after i bought my first house, its running 310 bhp, so entertaining for evening drives out in the dales still love 5 pot sound and i won't let go of it as i know how hard i had to work to afford to keep it when i got it.

2016 Qashqai 4x4, tows mrs TC's horse box and is good for long trips/ back up for when audi breaks or eventually dies.

2003 Audi a3 s line, originally my daily/work car before i got a company van. has refused to die for years so mrs uses it as her daily, think rust will be its death.

Just added a 2014 Transit Custom Sport, was too good a deal to turn down and is perfect for chucking mountain bike in and stuff i can't get in the berlingo for weekend jobs and general stuff like tip runs, shifting stuff about etc where its handy to have a proper van.
