Not a problem for me but it seems to be a problem for other people sometimes

Are the words ‘Problem’ and ‘Passion’ antonymous now?

This. All 4 of mine are >300g CO2/km, but I can only drive one at a time. That’s being green, that is. On a more serious note, the newest car is a teenager, keeping older cars going rather than scrapping for a new one does help the environment imo.

That said, I still want a FFRR (5l s/c please) and an Avantime, and I want another SL, but to convert it to electric, though it’d be financially stupid, and many, many more. If I didn’t spend more than half my life abroad, I’d probably have >4. N+1 is the only realistic answer.

As far as keeping everything taxed, etc, 3 cars are on one multi insurance policy, the M6 is cheaper on it’s own. 3 in May, 1 in Jan. Tax due Nov, Dec, Feb, July. MOT’s April, May, July x2.
I just set reminders in the phone calendar for everything on yearly repeat for 1 month early.

I just mentally added it up, and I’m paying over £3k/year for tax and insurance alone, never mind fuel or any actual car costs. Cheap hobby! smile

It’s just a way of keeping the government coffers topped up. Bit of a scam in my opinion.

The Swiss have a much fairer system that allows you to share number plates across a number of vehicles. You tax and insure based on the most expensive/highest risk and ten just clip your number plates to the car you want to use that day/week/month. Limited to 2 per plate for modern cars but unlimited for classics.

For a couple of mine it’s cheaper to use ‘layed up’ insurance when they are on SORN, then just add the miles if you use them.

Biggest cost is probably still servicing though.

How many pairs of shoes does your missus have from 10 years ago that she never wears but "won't let go"?
The shoes or coats analogy is the ideal one.

Sure, it could be possible to have only one pair of shoes, or one coat, that was a compromise of everything that was required from day to day, but that's not really practical or logical.

Non-car people struggle to extend that logic to automobiles, as they may just see them as a white good transport solutions. In the same way that people will have some walking boots, some comfortable daily shoes, and some trainers, then having a weekend sports car, daily family saloon, and maybe a defender too is perfectly logical.

Where do you keep that lot? And how do you keep on top of servicing and maintenance?!

That is quite a fleet - rather diverse too.

Ensuring they remain completely in check must be quite an undertaking - do you keep them all serviced/MOT'd and so forth or is a case that the interest shifts from one to another as time goes on?

Best way to silence a non car woman. I've had the "but you can't drive them all at once" excuse thrown at me to which I replied you can't wear more than one pair of shoes (change to handbag if better) but... Shockingly she saw the reasoning and backed down.

I've currently got 10. Some are appreciating assets, some are waiting love but I justify it by saying that none of them owe me anything. If I had the space and funds I'd have 100 more. I guess it's good as I'll never have any money for drink, drugs or hookers while I have cars as a hobby. lol

All of mine are ones that are highly punished by the treasury, and are also 12 years or more old.

I sincerely believe that maintaining and continuing to use vehicles for as long as if practically possible is a very environmentally friendly practice. Many of my previous cars have run long past being economically viable, by maintain and swapping in significant parts from cars from breakers .... proper trigger's brooms!!

For the past few years I've fluctuated between 3 and 7 vehicles. I like to have something comfy and reliable for long journeys, a cheap shed for general abuse, and something nice hidden away.

Current nice vehicle = Transporter van
Shed = 19 year old Yaris
Nice car = 205 gti awaiting restoration
other = Passat I'm flogging on ebay as damaged
other other = remains of 205 gti might restore one day

Well, it’s happened again, I’ve bought a bmw 135i coupe in red. It’s satisfied the sporty coupe desire and I’ve got a few plans for it. Great fun.
Problem is I’m still looking at classifieds less than a week after getting it - I guess it’s an addiction!

It's only an issue when your garden is full of random rotting hulks that haven't moved in 10 years. If they mostly work and drive though, what's the problem? It's not hoarding, it's collecting, and being a collector has so much more gravitas

Whoever said N+1 is right though, I have two cars, and for some reason desperately want a third.
If only... I only have one car (320d MSport) and one van (Transit Connect 210) for work, so can't really join the conversation, but when it comes to clothes, I hoard quite a bit. I used to sell Highland wear via ebay (kilts, sporrans, jackets, waistcoats) as the Mrs said my collection got too much at over 60 kilts plus accessories... all started researching my family tartan, to going on to collect rare tartan colours.

Some of them cost over a grand a pop (kilt suits), and I'll never let some of them go.

rolleyes

With cars, I can't see the issue if you have the place to keep them all... it would cost me too much for parking permits biggrin

N+1 is only true as long as n+1<D

Mrs Miserablegit discovered n+1 last week (I’ve had it four years in a carcoon behind a tractor) and I think we might have hit the limit !

Be careful out there...

Garage space is my main obstacle for more cars.

It is nice to keep them in a garage clean and polished ready for a drive.

I think it's fairly conclusive that us lot are not going to be a good influence haha.

My view is that unless you are causing a nuisance by having multiple cars and/or you're financially crippling yourself for the sake of cars, then it's doing no harm at all.

I have four cars, an RS Megane 225 and Twingo 133 being two of them. Have owned both from new and are now 13 and 9 years old respectively. They're not worth much but they're extremely good condition and low mileage. I have no reason to sell them and they cost me very little to insure, plus they are stored off the road and in no ones way.

My 'daily' car is an old E320 diesel Merc and my other is a CLS63. I recently put the CLS into a storage facility so can access it as needed but ultimately it gives it a secure, dry and heated space which is out of the way.

I have had people say, 'you can only drive one car at a time'. Based on that, no one would have more than one pair or shoes, handbag, trousers, watch, glasses. As a society we don't always own things based on pure necessity, cars are just a bit bigger! haha

I get alot of stick for having 3 Sheds and contemplate selling one or two all of the time (see my recent thread) but I still cannot let them go even though they aren't a patch on alot of you other guys collections quality wise.

Jaguar x-type estate - commute and dog
Audi TT 225 - going out with the missus
Mazda MX-5 NB - Weekend thrash

Whilst I can still afford the tax and insurance for these three they will be staying... However there is a 1.7 Puma for sale up the road that keeps winking at me!
