RE: Subaru Legacy Estate | Shed Buying Guide
Discussion
"£1100 for a new timing belt and water pump, a set of coil packs and spark plugs and an oil filter change"? They fairly bent that fella over, Jebus wept!
I love my '97 GTB on LPG, 65p/ L for the cleanest burning fuel and enough space in the back for a pair of spare front wings, front and back bumpers, trolley jack, toolbox AND a 2x12" subwoofer. I've put BC Racing suspension, Impreza 4 pots and classic Impreza front seats in mine, and with a Ganador exhaust it sounds epic. I enjoy bothering much pricier machinery in it and they're fantastic in the twisties for their weight and length, not much will keep up in the corners.
Just buy a BG5 GT-B if you get the chance, there's not many left now in the UK and replacement 3.5mm silicone hoses are cheap enough to replumb them and almost neutralise the VoD.

Went to Surrey Rolling road recently and there was one with 700hp and the rest of it looked pretty much stock.
Unless you're going for the sleeper look I don't know why you would choose a Legacy Estate over a WRX Wagon? Afaik the economy is no better and it doesn't seem much more practical unlike the Forester which has higher ground clearance.

That's a fair comment - but my my answer is because they are quicker at the top end. No stock Impreza will keep with a stock Legacy TT above 130mph - that includes all of the variations of stock power Imprezas.Unless you're going for the sleeper look I don't know why you would choose a Legacy Estate over a WRX Wagon?
The Legacy TT is still the fastest 2.0L in the world, from factory, registering 170mph at its top. It develops peak torque at around 6000rpm, meaning it is a motor that you have to rev to go but once in that 6000-7000 band, it really flies. That's why it will see its limited 7500rpm in 5th which registers at 169.5mph or something stupid like that.
It still can turn 60 in 5.2secs which is quite quick for a larger wagon. So there really isn't lots in it between the Impreza and Legacy - but the Legacy has the legs and is a better tourer. The Impreza is more raw.
OK, I admit - I am a bit of a fan of these. Having had both the B4 saloon version and now run the GTB. I have totaled 23 years ownership solid and yes, 6 or those years where there was overlap where I owned both saloon and estate. The B4 in 14 years never let me down and approaching 10 years with the GTB.
They are one of the few cars I just look forward to driving really. Not even to drive fast. They are such a great tourer and you can sit there doing 1200 miles and not feel tired - I have done that in one slog.
The 4 pot rumble makes them sound mean and they have a very throaty note. An iconic note and burble that is now rare, made so, due to the number of Imprezas of the era that have left the road and gone to car heaven. You can hear a burbling Subaru and know what it is from some distance.
Love them!

Space, kit, build quality and materials used.
I've just been given a chance to get a company car, but they've put a few rules in place for me. One of them is that it has to be < 7 years old.
I can worry about the rest of it later, but which variant would be the most fun in the 2012 + versions? I had a quick look, and they all look "nice", but none really look very...raw.
I don't want to look at other brands either, but am basically after something that has plenty of luggage space, so a wagon of some sort, but ideally it has to be fun. Foz STI?
Suggestions?

You won't get a Forester STI after 2007. I can worry about the rest of it later, but which variant would be the most fun in the 2012 + versions? I had a quick look, and they all look "nice", but none really look very...raw.

I've had both. The wrx is much smaller, about 100kg lighter and much more raw/exciting to drive. The legacy is vastly more refined, better equipped, quieter, and with a huge amount of space. But lacks a bit of craziness to drive. My 9 year old was getting cramped in back of the wrx, in the leggy there was masses of space.
I've got a 2000/01 model of these. Mine generally feels a bit knackered now. Suspension bushes feel worn as they knock and creak. The engine sends a horrible vibration through the car in 3 and 4th below 2k RPM, possibly engine / transmission mounts. The damn thing has never idled properly in the whole time i've owned it, and I can't figure out why. Second turbo has an oil leak. If I change up at roughly 4.5K the turbo set up seems too slow to respond, the exhaust valve that operates the second turbo stays open but there's not enough exhaust to spin both of them. The result is the power falls flat on it's arse until the ECU has had a couple of seconds to collect its thoughts. There is rust on the rear arches. There is rust on the sills. There is rust on the front slam panel on the bottom.
Apart from those minor issues, though, it's a great car!
