The other two pipes open up only under heavy load (there's a valve). Hence, they don't see anywhere near as much exhaust gas as the other two.

68 plate and newer ones though won't do that. They have an EU6c (everyone thinks it was WLTP, but that was just coincidental timing) GPF filter, so they don't soot the tailpipes up.

Why the four exhausts?
Have you just returned to planet Earth having been away for 10 years?

Well played sir, in one.

Have noticed that the more ageing golf Rs now show wear and use in only 50% of the four exhausts. Trinkets a bit like the exuberant farty pop noise echoing up and down town retail parks of a weekend.
I've got an R and two of the pipes are upstream of valves so only get used if you have them set to open all the time or in sport mode. Personally I find if you clean them once a week they stay shiny and no one notices anyway smile
The exception being the estate. The mk7 had only 2 of them actually plumbed in, the 7.5 has all 4 attached but without valving, so they are 'open' all the time.

Odd.

Have just a bit more power than a Golf diesel would help.

Are you weird about every 300bhp 4 exhaust car, like a Ferrari Mondial for example or is it just the Golf R?

I have already placed my bet.

Do we also get bonus points for one exhaust per cylinder mockery?...

How many pipes on an MR2 Sir?

2 Sir, the maximum number for any 4 pot, as per the book of motoring high brow, pompousness.

Re 4 exhausts. A friend has a 3 litre Alfa with 2>4 stainless steel sports exhaust - 2 tips are fake. We have a mutual friend who takes umbrige at the shiny unused pipes, and has offered to darken them.
Is there a more 1st world problem than cleaning/dirtying a car exhaust pipe for visual effect?
Oh, and I prefer the Golf, but would buy used and change the exhaust.

Well I’ve got an a35 and it’s great even without the adaptive dampers. The interior sets it aside from any other hot hatch . It’s way out in front in that respect and I thought I the r is a bit boring to look at. I have the aero kit on the same colour a35 as in the vid and it’s just about right without being to shouty.

Nobody in to tell us how great their Civic is with a few anecdotes about how they overtook someone in a Golf R, making it the better car?

Yeah not like the Honda fanboys to miss an opportunity

But apparently the Civic is actually a rival for the A45, not the A35.... rolleyes

Isn't the A35 more of a rival for the S3 Audi? Both being 'prestige' brands?

These reviews are almost always super conservative and without much recommendation towards what future iterations should be like. Dan didn't even so much as mention that there is a new Amg a45 on the way that might fix the dullness aspect of these cars.

Let me see if i can get us out of the vacuum...one day it would be great if we could have a four wheel drive hatch in the mold of the Lancia Integrale. A sort of Megane trophy rs/r, very lightweight, with great throttle adjustability and steering feel, but with a active 4wd. a 4WD car that is actually exciting. Maybe at 1350 kilos- done with enough carbon pieces to make it possible. I've seen a few new gen Ford Focus RS's with many aftermarket carbon pieces that hit around this weight, so it most certainly is possible. If it was special enough...like maybe the new Singer type redux of the Integrale might be, then it might represent a new class of supercar.. the small, tactile, fun to drive all weather supercar. Now that is a remit. j

the R did look impressive taking those corners in what looked like quite damp if not wet conditions. be interesting to see a GTi handle round those same bends in those conditions. would it be level with the R I wonder? was the R not even breaking sweat round those bends?

you can tell the golf had the adaptves as the camera was jigging up and down in the Merc.

i prefer the golfs dash to the merc - not a fan of these new flat screens that are coming in. looks less cockpit like to me.

think if my 6 numbers came up tonight I would go and order £40k-45k worth of golf. seems a great all rounder although I think I prefer the look of the Mk7 than the 7.5 as it has gone a bit too far backwards on the subtlety stakes and is even more GTD look-e-likee than the mk7.

The GTI would be every bit as good round those bends in those conditions (I'll ignore the fact it might even be marginally better because it's lighter).

Where the R would have an advantage is on corner exit, due to the extra traction from 4wd.

it would be a interesting test, however most magazines in the US/Uk stay away from doing these sorts of tests. At most you'll see is a 4wd hatch thrown in at a handling day or car of year type thing; but never a purposeful comparison test down a wet b road. Sucks. I don't think the manufacturers like them comparing such similar models from within their ranges. Wish the manufacturers didn't have such influence. j

Some Integrales had the twin wheelbarrow exhausts

But yes, many turbo 4-pots ( and Integrales ) of that time managed with just one outlet
