Because it'll likely share lots with the 400hp RS3.
Surely the S3? I mean they all have the same mbq or whatever platform grantedPhantomPH said:
S3 runs at 300hp (well, slightly under but you know what I mean). The RS3 already packs the 400hp which is why I would imagine the R Golf will use a version of that same power plant to get the same figures. Would seem silly to re-invent the wheel, as it were!
I very much doubt the golf R will get the 5 pot.Niffty951 said:

Let me dreamI drove a Focus ST that was mapped with a straight through exhaust and it felt very nose heavy and rough, it didn’t feel anywhere near as precise or as nippy as my then 200 bhp EP3 Civic Type R.
Now I know a crummy old modded Focus ST isn’t a 50 grand Audi RS3 and they use different engines but I see a lot of people worshiping 5 cylinder engines and I don’t see what the fuss is about! Even seeing RS3’s in the wild, they just sound....rough. The B58 in 40i BMW’s sound much smoother. I also imagine a new RS3 weighing a fair bit with the AWD and the engine thus blunting the experience.
Do I need to drive an RS3? Am I an idiot?
Happy to be corrected!

Inline 5 cycliner engines are inherently unbalanced which in my opinion makes them sound fantastic.

Front of a Mk7, back of a Mk6, bland and predictable. About as interesting as a rainy day in Hartlepool. But then that's Golfs for you - lowest common denominator motoring for the sheeple
What exciting, edgy, different car do you drive ?I have had a lot of fun on rainy days in Hartlepool !
A friend of mine has a 2007 Mk5 GTI 5 door as a daily.
The car is maintained to the highest standards regardless of cost, it's immaculate both mechanically and cosmetically. It's very good to drive and I think still looks great in a conservative kind of way.
I can't help but thinking later versions particular the MK7 & 7.5 have got a bit bloated and somehow miss that GTI'ness.

The Golf GTi's seem to be getting less and less inspiring with each successive generation. It feels like Volkswagen desire to maintain the resale value of the car, is overiding their ability to make genuinely class leading hot hatches.
My friend has a MK7.5 GTI manual and he broke his leg so we swapped cars as my car was an automatic and I had it for nearly 2 months.People think they look bland but not the 7.5 with the lovely LED lights that really set the car apart from the lesser versions. It was a very very good all rounder, wouldn’t say it’s a ‘hot’ hatch though, it’s a fast version of a Golf, didn’t handle anywhere near as good as my Civic Type R but then, it shouldn’t as it’s not a ‘hot hatch’, a mere marketing exercise and the proof would be Audi offering the same engine with the same output badges as TFSI or 2.0 pre WLTP.
The Golf R would be the car you should look for when words ‘class leading’ pop up. They are so sought after, people are breaking into people’s homes just to get the keys and the residuals are very good.
I wasn’t around in the 80’s when the first GTI’s came but what I do know is that the MK3 and MK4 GTI’s we’re far from class leading so I’m not sure what return to form you’re looking for. MK5 & 6 were essentially the same cars with a different body as well and they didn’t cause a fuss!
Can a performance car be less exciting?
The Golf GTI, it's up there, with the V8 S5, as the most disappointing performance cars I've driven. Bland and forgettable unfortunately.
Overrated IMO. There are other quick hatchbacks that are better all rounders. I see the appeal to the Golf in GTD form or in a normal specification, but the GTI, nope.
