£30K would buy the very best 996 so this is madness.

I little more fight in them than a modern Porsche too.

I had fond memories on a 987 Cayman S in my mind when I took one of these out for a spin and it bit me very hard. Not a mistake I'm likely to make again but treat with respect when working close to the grip limits!

Indeed. Wouldn’t it be cheaper to pick up a solid 986S for £5k and do all of this work to it (except wheel and paint colour) if you really wanted one this well sorted?

The market itself is dictated by rarity and there are so many of these left that values won’t go up much for years to come.

I suppose it must happen at some point - there are a lot of cars that a way inferior to the 986S that command several times the money.

The front number plate is wonky.

It's making me much more angry than it should.

Don't even care that it costs too much, fix the wonky!

That speedo must rank as one of the must unfriendly and hard to read I've ever seen.
Why wouldn't you highlight 30, 60 and 70 rather than 25, 50 and 75?

I like these. This one is a lot of money, but I can imagine it would appeal to some, even if PH forum members consistently fail to "get" how this sort of thing appeals to certain types.

Anyway, I'd happily have a Boxster for a weekend toy. Add some nice wheels, a fruity exhaust and make sure the suspension is fresh, and I think it would be a great thing to enjoy on sunny afternoons.

You just use the digital readout in every Porsche that has it in reality.

My Leon does the goes up in 20s & is possibly worse - fortunately there's a digital speedo as part of the trip computer

I've got a 2001 986 S sat on charge in the garage at home that I haven't used for about a year.

If anyone is interested in buying it, PM me! biggrin

P.S. Good article. My one and only brand new car ever was a speed yellow 2001 986s. Loved it, the handling was incredible and it was quick enough to have some serious fun, especially off the motorways. It was so good that when I was looking for a 'fun' car about 5 years ago, I went and bought another 2001 986s as a toy. I spent a small fortune fixing it up to be as good as the original I remembered so fondly, then bought an XKR and haven't really made much use of the 986s since. Hence the semi-serious note above. smile

I had a 2001 986S for a few years and loved it, was expensive to run though and whilst 260BHP in a car that size and weight should be more than enough the long gearing meant it never felt particularly quick. The steering was the best thing about the car and I preferred it to the 996's I tried at the time

While I like the Boxster and remember the launch and dad having one as a loaner from Reading, I just couldn't get on with paying £30k for one. Even as a collector's piece. The problem is that if you drive it, it won't be worth £30k and it's not quite special enough for

The least they could have done, however, is get the front plate on straight! That is a bit pathetic.

I'd be happy with a slightly worn looking, but mechanically sorted, one with a bit of fettling and a set of driving and spot lamps on the bonnet.

A lot of negativity around the £30k Boxster 986 in the article, but there's only 10 of them so it doesn't affect the majority of people commenting here. If someone wants to add one to their collection let them, this is just a show case by Porsche to rejuvenate one of their best sports cars and I think its a great idea.
I'm the proud owner of 2 Boxster 986 S, a Lapis 2001 non-facelift model and a Cobalt 2002 facelift model and I am a complete convert. They are simply great cars, coming from a 13 year history with ///M cars I didn't think i would like the 986 as much as i do. The M3's and M5's I had were great (E36s, E46s, E34s) but the completeness of the 986 S is just staggering, it never ceases to put a smile on my face. Unfortunately this year both have suffered different issues (water pump, clutch amongst other smaller items) but they are cars from the early 00's so it is to be expected. I am also just about to purchase a 3rd 986 S which i intend to use for track work. I've had one of the current ones on track and it is extremely rewarding. A real and proper driver's car.

They're decent cars at a tenth of that cost! But fack me, you'd have to be a total lunatic to so much as consider that! In fact I'd go as far to say you'd need to be an UTTER ! smile

For that cash, if you wanted a car of the same vintage, sonorous and actually faster for a 3rd of the cost, one would highly recommend a TVR Chimaera.

The article is a weird mixture of hyperbole and faint praise, presumably reflecting the ambivalence of the writer, who was doubtless grateful for the ride but probably agrees with the above comments on value.
Hello!

First time my writing has been called that... You're probably about right, as it's certainly not what I'd spend that money on, though a nice reminder of how much good there was in the original Boxster concept.

Bizarre that there is so much obsession on the price. Just accept that you are not their target market.

I saw a very early Boxster yesterday, and it appealed with its borderline retro looks with the amber lights.

This (facelift?) look... well... like a bar of soap.
