Does 516lb ft of torque help take the TDI taste away?

No. No it doesn't.

I really like the idea of the old rs4 and s4 with a V8.

The 2.0 diesel makes sense as company transport for high mileage but in not really understanding this car.

Surely the fwd 2.0 turbo petrol will be more fun due to the significantly lower weight, give similar fuel consumption and save 15 grand?
That’s what’s in the s3 though. Got to have some headroom from that. You still can’t fit anyone with legs in the back of an S4 so they have to distinguish it somehow.
Absolutely true though I can't help thinking if spending 50K on a fast Audi saloon the RS3 with a high performance 5 cylinder might be more fun than the S4. Indeed the S3 might be more enjoyable.

The A4 is a really good car but I'm not sure an S4 is worth the premium over a regular A4 or not stretching to the RS model. I say this (of course) without driving the car - it could be wonderful.

But these cars are stopgaps until the hybrids and full electric arrive so I can certainly understand Audi not stretching to new big engines.

The newly overhauled what?

Have I missed something here?
I think it's a typo and that they mean the new M340i with 380+ bhp.

I'd personally take the 3 litre straight 6 anyday. I admit to being a BMW fanboy but there's absolutely no competition between a derv Audi and a 6 BMW.

The Audi interior is nice looking though I'll give it that.

It doesn't matter how good it is, it is now considered rightly or wrongly to be the root of all evil and will be priced and legislated out of existence. I like turbo diesel torque and have had a few but the eco warriors now rule and they despise the fuel.
No they don't. They think they do, but they don't. Politicians (and those who actually have the real money/power) will continue to BS them, and bring in stupid laws and revisions to appease them and try garner votes, but there are decades left of the black pump: hell, if Trump takes 2020 and BJ jumps further in to his lap as expected...... we'll be more than likely driving cars running on coal within 10 years.

Based on the article, I think I'll stick to my petrol S4 Avant, the new diesel S4 doesn't sound much better and the tech in my current S4 is as good, matrix LEDs are awesome!

Off topic for a moment, I had a s4 for a year in 2017 and found it a very good car particularly 0-80 wise. I've hankered after a c63 w204 for ages but wasnt sure if it would actually be/feel any faster in normal driving with the gearbox tech in the s4 and 4wd..

As someone who has both could you enlighten please
There’s probably not much in it off the line. The c63 box is slower witted than the S4’s but then you add 4wd, to help the s4 off the line, then take a bit off for a bit of lag and it evens up again.
The C is much more of an event though aurally and gets so much more attention and many more positive comments than the S.

The S4 feels like the fastest a comfortable anonymous mid range car should go.
The c63 feels like the most comfortable you can be whilst being strapped to an awesome engine.

I hope that makes sense.
Thanks very much for the reply :thumb up:

I should mention the C does 200 miles for £70 of fuel, and the S does north of 300 The OH hates filling up anyway, so the C63 probably going to be a short term thing until the end of the year. But it's great fun owning one.

“one that uses a mild-hybrid diesel powerplant to produce 347hp/516lb ft while also offering a claimed 40.9mpg combined. The numbers, it will venture, do not lie”

I would venture recent events suggest the mpg numbers are always lies!

I miss the old C63 V8 growl, but the S4 is easily as quick and a great all-rounder, especially with all the latest cockpit tech, and the Quattro provides awesome grip.

I completely forgot about the BiTDi A6’s with the fake noise they make, this will probably sound more aggressive and sporty when driving around down. The petrol S4’s/5’s are almost silent when ever I see one drive past!

I gave it 2 out of 10, see its at 4.6 PH average. Pathetic imo, just by a petrol, people still have not learned from VW group diesel scandal.
I would rather drive a Robin Reliant than this piece of diesel st. Seriously HATE performance cars that are known thoroughbred petrols then throwing a stty diesel into the mix years after. Pure brand dilution for the playstation, I phone, pink shirt wearing generation.

Oh, do be quiet, little boy.

The S4 is not a known thoroughbred petrol. In fact, they’ve always been pretty stodgy to drive. The torque of the diesel will be ideally suited to the nature of the car. If it wasn’t so small in the back, I’d seriously consider one

And... Worth 50% of fk all in 3years time.
Ps, what's with the puny 12'' screen, can't see why Audi don't just fit a 42'' and be done with it..

I suspect from the timing of your post - you may have enjoyed your Friday night out maybe a wee bit too much? Or maybe it wasn't a good night at all, seeing as you're back home again alone, ranting away on the internet?

Not sure why you are comparing the Model 3 to the Audi S4, diesel or not. The Model 3 is a respectable car in it’s own right, but it doesn’t need to be compared to literally every car on the planet. The demographics of the S4 buyer will not be interested in the Model 3 because as fast as is, it lacks the visual drama and sportiness , interior design that people tend to buy the S range (these days...) for.

To be fair straight line acceleration has little to do with how sporty a car is. If it did then an RS6 or a hellcat would be more of a sports car than an elise.

That being said the S4 isn't sporty either and with the switch to diesel I would rather have a Tesla.
