Oh dear it is real, was rather hoping Audi were just messing about.
We have lost the manual gearbox, real handbrake and now the final insult it has gone diesel.
I'll stick with my B7, V8 petrol engine and manual gearbox.

I too intend to enjoy, celebrate even, the closing book of the internal combustion engine.
This thing is a bit of a grey dot on lineup of red dot cars.
I've found you can chuck the outgoing S4 around in the twisties and be entertained,
Would I take it on a track day? - Probably not ( and yes, it's against the terms of my lease)
Would I swap it for an S4 diesel? - No, I get 22 p per mile form the company as opposed to 14, and if treated nicely can do this:
Would I have it as a company car, rather than an opt out purchase? No - The BIK cost more than the rentals even for 15k a year. (so I make that a free car)
Will it keep up with a c63?
No.

Model 3 range = 329 miles
Not a problem for most people but should be considered if you're a motorway cruiser
The Tesla has a list price you will get charged...

The sound isn’t as great as I replaced the exhausts with miltecs as soon as I got them, but synthesized cabin sounds aren’t great either.
My immediate neighbor has an 18 plate S5 V6T and it’s sounds awful in the mornings, really, really bad, so it doesn’t seem that modern smaller engines sound any better. At least AMG still have that gorgeous sounding V8 in circulation!

Without sounding good, a lot of the charm is lost.
But imagine a lot won't be bought by enthusiasts, but just people who want something a bit more flash, so guess won't matter tootling around town.

I'm sure its an amazing "car", but a true performance car needs so much more. Revs, noise, entertaining handling.
What I would also add is that this would be much easier to accept if it wasn't labelled up as an 'S' car.
I can also see it appearing in the PH Brave Pill section 15 years from now.

Christ that is pitiful. Actually just put me off the whole car. I really like the idea of a powerful diesel A4 estate. I'm biased, I own one (well, an old one) and it is brilliant. Comfy, quick, discreet, and practical.
However, I really don't like badging this as an S4. An S4 should be a regular A4 with a special engine, and this doesn't cut it. I think this is the point where modern cars are moving away from what I want from a car, so I think I will be going for older ones from now on. This, or a B8 S4? Or even a B7 RS4? No contest.

So they swapped a lovely sounding petrol engine for a diesel, removed the MMI wheel, and put fake exhausts on one side. Plus made the front styling overly fussy. Struggling for any positives. Given the S5 will follow suit I won’t be changing my 2017 S5 for a new one.
My plan was actually to go for an S6 Avant next but they decided we couldn’t have the petrol of that either!
Bmw or merc for me next.

Mercedes do exactly the same and it makes me really sad. I guess that I'm from a time when having a real exhaust meant something though. Now its all about economy/emissions and touch screens. gottans said:

Sadly, the manual in the B7 V8 absolutely ruins a perfectly fine car. Quite how Audi messed the gear ratios up so badly and then fitted such a ridiculous final drive ratio really is something to be applauded. Particularly when the auto is so well suited to the V8. We have lost the manual gearbox, real handbrake and now the final insult it has gone diesel.

I had both back to back and couldn’t wait to get rid of the B7. It was deeply disappointing.

I have had an S4 Avant for the last 9 years - the longest I have ever hung on to a car - as I love it so much I wouldn’t know what to replace it with. It won’t be the new S4 oil burner though...
I drove an s4 avant for about 4yrs, without doubt one of the most boring cars I've ever had, different stroke and all that.I think anybody thinking of buying any diesel in the UK needs their head examining. Regardless of how good , how clean and how economical they are the truth is they will be sacrificed by the government to appease the eco-warriors who now seem to be running this countries environmental policies. I'll be stunned if we don't see significantly higher road tax and fuel costs for diesels in the very near future and let's be honest the only reason to buy diesel over petrol is running costs.
