If you're doing the M1 north jump off at Newcastle (ish) and head north to Edinburgh via the A68, its a far better route than the A1 and if you're going M6, Carlisle then the A7 otr up to Moffat and off to Edinburgh that way. The Highlands aren't the only good roads.

M1 ends near Leeds ,you mean A1/M.

Ok, yes but you know what I mean... and I also said M6 north and jump off at Moffat, but that'd be the M74 but its a continuous stretch.

Not sure where you are starting from, but a 911 is built for this type of thing isn't it; a sporty/GT? .... Hardly an Atom or 7. An A6 is is a huge thing to lug on a driving hol if you don't need its large family carrying capacity.
Now that a classic Impreza is on the list, I'd go for that.

Yup, my ranking would be:
Impreza
911
Audi

If you are going to do the west coast or NC500 take the 911, some of the roads and passing places are narrow so a RS6 will seem massive. Out there you won't get much of a DAB signal anyway.
Just use Google maps on your phone, get a vent mount if necessary.
Download the map data before you get north of Glasgow!!

I live up here, take some of these comments with a pinch of salt 😂

It's not a total desert, don't bother with fuel cans and satellite phones!

Take the smallest, lightest, best handling car you can get. Probably the 172 as I loved driving mine on B roads. Loads of power is not required as you won't get a chance to use it that often.

Travel outside peak times if you can, the roads go from busy to quiet pretty quickly after 7pm.

Stop in for a cup of tea if your going through Drumnadrochit 😁👍

Get the sleeper train to Inverness and hire a car
Well yes, except fly is half the time and half the cost.

Main prob is that decent car hires have mileage limits with silly £££ per mile over.

You can get Aston, Bentley, Fezza, Caterham etc delivered to the airport, but if you do a load of miles you'll pay silly money for excess miles.

So for a week's work, it's not an option (unless you want a 'normal car' which will be piss cheap - so fly drive).

Where about are you going to be working? There are some really remote and st roads up here that you don’t want to be taking a 911 or indeed a RS6 down. If it’s the middle of Inverness you’ll be fine.

There are some amazing roads that can be recommended if you’re looking to make the drive up slightly longer but far more enjoyable.

911. If closer to the destination the Scooby might rank, but not in this case.

I’d take up the local guy on advice. Many tourists in Schotland now so you really need to be aware of where and where (+when) not to go.

Hope you share road trip experiences and perhaps even a picture or two.

Enjoy the trip!

FFS Scotland is not the third world we even have TV, toilets and running water.

If I started a thread " Driving To ENGLAND Furra Week".

WTF would you all think?

Feckin Saaaveners no wonder so many Scots want independence.

Maybe you should keep Stevenage as your playground instead of feckin up our roads.

Great scenery. Obvs lol. Last time I went up I flew but drove back, however what I noticed the most about it was the incredible lack of cars compared to the South East I mean just incredible, perfect roads really. Picked up a hire car at the airport and loved driving it around so much I kept it and returned it to Heathrow. FYI, roads below Preston are still clogged with traffic, note to self: next time fly back.

Flying? This is a car enthusiasts website, supposedly.

That choice of cars and people say don't bother just fly? Wot? Wot? Wot?

There's people in my office who think that driving 2 hours is a monumental mission to Mars, who won't drive anywhere out of their way, and think that 3 hours a night watching Love Island means they are too busy to do anything.

Having done the journey from daan saaf to NW Highlands about 50 times, believe me when I say the first 400 miles are REALLY boring. Unless you like motorways of course. I therefore understand why some fly to Inverness then rent a car. (Often a Caterham).

I'd say " Why?"

England is st. The roads are full. The hospitals are full. The jobs are boring. And there's nothing to see or do.

I did the west coast of Ireland to up around the NC500 and back in a week .. 2000 miles in a Z4 with the roof down “almost” all the way recently

Some of the road surfaces are a bit crappy .. foreign tourists in rental cars can be very erratic and there are numerous big white rolling road blocks !!

Overall a good experience .. petrol stations plentiful though if you want superunleaded you might have to plan ahead

Following the recent national exposure of the Supercars caught doing 130+ the police have really started to crack down

I came across a couple of camera vans in quite remote locations tucked at the end of long straights, also traffic cops with hand held lasers along the Great Glen

As has been said some of the roads across the border from England and up through the Lowlands are fabulous and a great way to go if you have the time

Any of the cars you have will eat the journey .. once you get north of Preston the driving starts to get enjoyable

Last month I drove from the East Midlands to Inverness and then around the NC500, Isle of Skye and then through Glencoe in an S2000.

The journey up is a little tedious I agree but once there the roads were brilliant in the whole, some of the really small roads had potholes but no worse than the midlands! I actually found the majority of road users to be great at letting faster traffic through and only got stuck in a couple of processions...although I imagine it is getting busier now.

TAKE THE IMPREZA....I scraped my exhaust a few times and I imagine the Porsche would be the same.

Ultimately the car doesn't really matter, any car can be great fun on the right road or a total chore on the wrong road. Wouldn't get caught up with what will be the fastest because on your average rural road up here, the fastest is whoever is the latest for work / the school run / the local mart starting so be prepared to yield to Mr McTavish in his ruined Hilux complete with a bored Collie giving you the dead eye.
