BMW have had nonsense numbers on some models for what 20 years
For over 80 years, the straight 6, 2.0L 328. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_328
McLaren have this sorted perfectly across their line-up.
570s = 570ps (562BHP)
600lt = 600ps (591BHP)
650s = 650ps (641BHP)
675lt = 675ps (666BHP)
720s = 720ps (710BHP)
This makes perfect sense to me and I still don't understand it when people say that the McLaren numbering is confusing.
Now I have a new Audi, an A4 35TFSI Avant. Its a 2 litre petrol and I have absolutely no idea what the 35 means other than its a designation of power output of some type, and that most of the time it doesn't feel like it has enough.

Weird how it has gaps... Audi’s new engine badges
25: 80kW and under (up to 106hp)
30: 81kW to 91kW (107hp to 127hp)
35: 110kW to 120kW (145hp to 159hp)
40: 125kW to 150kW (165hp to 198hp)
45: 169kW to 185kW (223hp to 244hp)
50: 210kW to 230kW (278hp to 304hp)
55: 245kW to 275kW (324hp to 363hp)
60: 320kW to 340kW (423hp to 449hp)
70: 400kW and above (529hp and above)
Confusingly, there are gaps between horsepower categories that mean some of Audi’s current range doesn’t appear to fit into any of these groups. For example, a 3.0-litre A6 BiTDI produces 320hp – not enough to earn a ’55’ badge, but too much for a ’50’. Likewise, the entire Q7 range doesn’t seem to fit in.

The badge on the back of a BMW hasn't always been a direct reflection of the engine capacity, this isn't "new" news.
It was for donkeys years except for the odd exception like the E28 525E. It's only in recent years this has changed, and to be fair it was always close I can't see why it's a problem to be honest, bigger number means more power. Seems to make sense. It's just that you aren't used to the numbers.

That's hasn't been in Audi's current range since WLTP. Or rather, it's reappeared with a few tweaks as the S6...Does seem weird though that the the number system has gaps...
