RE: Mercedes S600 Coupe (C140) | The Brave Pill
Discussion
In its day this car was, quite unquestionably, the best car in the world. At 12k it is still an incredible bargain, in particular compared with the prices commanded by its wannabe rivals (think about the comparatively primitive Continental R, or the shed-quality and shed-engineered Aston Virage). Its looks may be challenging (I find them very elegant and restrained for the size), but this is a car only equalled by the first Royce’s Ghost, or the J12 Hispano in its uncompromised engineering and manufacturing superiority. One should just look at small items like the forged seat rails or the titanium radiator fan to realise that this will remain an unsurpassed automotive peak.

I've never seen that before. Tacky awfulness IMO, and I'll be amazed if thats from MB as claimed. This car is too dear but you can't blame the vendor for chancing his arm

Agreed. Both the saloon and coupe NEED wider rims to fill out the arches, especially at the rear. There's a saloon near me on staggered Monoblocs and they do transform it into something far easier on the eye.
The standard rims make the track seem far too narrow.
I nearly bought a near enough identical version in 2015 however it was a jap import (not fresh however). Managed to speak to a couple of prior owners and the car sounded legit, they had no reason to fib, a dealer was selling it. 6k was the asking back then...bought the flight ticket to go and see it but bottled it at the last minute! With hindsight I don’t regret it.
Am I alone in thinking that the view from the rear 1/4 is reminiscent of a RR Camargue, in that it appears over-bodies/under-wheeled.
And by that I mean the axle doesn’t appear wide enough to push the wheels out sufficiently in the arches
Anyhoo, in the early 2000’s I had a ride to a Masonic do in exactly this model
Always remember the owner saying that as he had his own company he decided to reward himself with one
Justified it to his wife by saying that it did 30+mpg, all the time, whilst indicating the economy meter (and lifting his foot off the loud pedal as he did so, so the needle swung completely to the left, indicating 40mpg)
By the time we got from Chesterfield to Burton on Trent we had a achieved, with very steady driving, 14mpg
One can only assume that his company was one that traded shares in oil.....as on the way home, including a ‘spirited’ drive along the A38, it was single figures
Magnificent but you need to have deep pockets, and hope that your spouse has similar-depth pockets and a bucket-load of understanding...

This was mine on the day I picked it up (purchase via the smoker barge thread), I also have somewhere a pic from a previous owner on the autobahn off the top of the clock!
An interesting car for me as it turned out on reading the history I in fact knew the original owner and had been in the car quite a few times when it was brand new.

Another picture showing that the right rims work. Massive improvement. An interesting car for me as it turned out on reading the history I in fact knew the original owner and had been in the car quite a few times when it was brand new.
