I don't get the PH thing about 'the rear wheel drive variants will be more desirable".

From my perspective, this car is about being an everyday car and as such, having xDrive will make it much easier to deploy the available power in Blighty's somewhat damp conditions.

I don't understand the whole "M car too obvious....get an Alpina thing". It's not as if they don't have 4 exhausts, oh, and big wheels and silly decals too. I think they're less understated than the M cars.

Agree - pity 'our' B3 currently are RWD-only.

Used, rear drive B3's are more appealing? Would be if you could bloody well find one.

Glad it’s gone to Xdrive. Mine (D3 admittedly) struggled for traction & used to get stuck on a flat car park if there was a hint of snow. Just got a 330d Xdrive Touring with Schnitzer springs so better than std but not as good as an Alpina.

I wonder if this will have the usual glued on naff looking Alpina chin spoiler.

It's not the most potent wagon - that title goes to the B3's big brother the B5 Touring which packs a 600bhp V8....

That's the D3, the proper M3 rival is the B3.

And one looks like a factory car, and one looks like a chavved up three series.

Along with the almost standard B3 xxx or D3 xxx plate.

Question, would you rather get stuck in a lift with an Alpina owner, or Impreza wrx owner?
Impreza wrx owner would have BO.
Alpina owner, too much Davidoff

Tough Call.

Why hasn’t PH reviewed the M340i?

Well, what can I say, great car I'm sure but why is everything getting fatter and just more generally ugly. This, 15 years ago would have been a 5series. Look at this gaudy, now becoming ever bigger kidney grill. It used to be subtle, no more! I guess Chris Bangle's design has won, years after he left......

X-drive ruins the steering feel for me, much prefer it without. Traction is fine in the dry, just modulate your input better in the damp/wet

As for snow/winter etc......the right tyres will have a much much much bigger effect than x-drive on its summer boots

I think I would buy a used B3S Touring if I could find one for sale, but they're seemingly so bloody rare. Plenty of D3's around but I want a petrol, dammit.
I'm currently looking at ~2-year-old midsized saloons, with the C43 AMG topping my list.
I'd love to compare with the F30 Alpina B3, but I've found precisely none for sale in the UK.

I like the wheels on that spy shot one more than I do the usual 21-spoke Alpina style wheels too...
That’s because alpinas appeal to people on piston heads, but all the sensible people on here would rather wait and buy used and a new car is new money and financial suicide. No one else buys them so you can’t get any used ones
