I know why you say they are speculator cars but people also do drive them. Took mine to the Ring and there was another one there with the owner enjoying it every bit as much as I was. They are fabulous cars, IMO the “peak modern 911”.
Oh no doubt and fantastic that you do! I was more talking from my own financial point of view
Of course if my 6 numbers come up, I’ll take an R please and I’ll drive it around Europe for the rest of my days!

The main visual differences with a 996 GT3 are the aerokit & GT3 badge, so you're saying the 996 hasn't dated badly if it's aerokitted?idk what it is, the 996 has dated badly but the GT3 just really does something to me, easily my favourite GT
Or the GT3 has dated badly but because of what it is you think it looks great anyway?
Personally I think the 996 looks prettier next to the newer cars, a Mk1 GT3 in Zanzibar please

Cheers for wasting an afternoon I should have spent working Rest assured, it took longer to fix it and write about, than it did to read it
I started pining for the 996 GT3 road car, went to see one, glimpsed a Carrera Cup car lurking in the corner of the showroom, and started a chain of research and rabbit hole malarkey, egged on by various PH well-wishers/irresponsible bystanders.
I now have a completely unforeseen part time job commitment called ‘owning a race car’.

I personally prefer the looks and size of the 997. Round headlights are essential. I also like the idea that it retains the hydraulic steering.
I'm also aware variations of the 911 had engine issues back in the 996 days. The only guaranteed solution was to get the stronger Turbo or GT engine, apparently.
Did the 997 ever solve the engine issues? What variants are the most solid?

Is the 997 any different size wise to a 996?I'm also aware variations of the 911 had engine issues back in the 996 days. The only guaranteed solution was to get the stronger Turbo or GT engine, apparently.

Edited for stupidity.

In fact the GT3 and Turbo engines were both based on the air-cooled Mezger design up to the end of the 997 range for GT3 and a little earlier than that for the Turbo when the new 9A! (?) based engine was introduced for the Turbo.
It was the 996 C2 and C4 and 997 Gen1 C2 and C4 up to the PDK era that had engine problems ...
Until the 991 GT3 threw up problems with the non Mezger engine then fitted ..
If anybody wishes to fine-tune this summary, feel free !

For various reasons, you can make a case for (certainly see the attraction of) every single iteration of the GT3.
I can only afford one. This is one of my favourite pictures of it:
Agree completely. They are all fantastic cars and while their appeal has broadened over the years they remain the enthusiasts choice. I loved my 996GT3. Some things I preferred over the new one (991.2) like better steering and heavier clutch but the real USP in the latest car is that engine. Surely one of the all time greats, and to hear it fully stretched is truly shocking for a road legal car. And we should also celebrate that Porsche continue to give us a manual. What else is there at any price point to compare? I can only afford one. This is one of my favourite pictures of it:
