RE: Audi S6 Avant vs. Mercedes-AMG E53 Estate

The diesel S6 could become the case study in how long product planning and development cycles are and how out of touch with consumer opinion this can make new models. Regardless of how well it disguises it’s origins, Audi have seriously misjudged the market and appetite for a car like this.
I've driven the Q7 with the same drivetrain & it works a treat at no point did you wish for it to be a petrol, both cars have there place the S6 will sell very well. Remember it's a hybrid so will not be hit by the same legislation as ICE cars, also the reason most petrol cars are turbocharged these days is to give the cars more torque (to get somewhere near their diesel that they replaced the petrol with) which is what the consumers demanded. Now if you're doing below 12k then the S6 may not be for you but an RS6/E53 will, it's just nice to have the choice also Mercedes have introduced a new straight 6 diesel hybrid so the diesel is far from dead infact it gives you the best of both worlds.

The Mercedes ones may not by physically connected to the exhaust system but at least they're open and the exhaust gases (mostly) flow through them.
Even when connected, exhaust tips have been more about styling than engineering for a long time.
Yes and I don't know why I let it bother me so much! I just felt disappointed when I was looking at the full fat AMG models recently in a dealership...and you can see the tiny exhaust pipes behind pretend big ones. Even when connected, exhaust tips have been more about styling than engineering for a long time.
It must just be an age thing with me though and I'm used to cars having real(not fake) exhausts on them. I guess that manufacturers are just starting to prepare us all for when all cars go electric.

Wow, that’s like the car version of taking off her bra and it’s just chicken fillets.Besides that, I think diesel isn’t a stupid idea for an estate. Hopefully though, all the current S6 owners will continue to lambast diesel S cars and they’ll depreciate like a tonne so I can replace my 330d touring for one in 5 years for less than £25k....
So do electric turbochargers eliminate lag, or is it just massively reduced? I imagine they don't act like a supercharger (always spinning), but rather spool up based on throttle position (or on load more generally) at any revs?
Do they make any sound?
I can't work out if I prefer them to mechanical or not. What I'd really like is for mild hybridisation to be paired with revvy n/a petrol engines, for low speed efficiency and high speed fun. Won't hold my breath, though.

As the article alludes, I think the S6's biggest problem is the A6 50TDI.
I would agree. Whilst not something everyone would want to do for a few hundred quid you can add a tuning box and be not far off the performance. The main S add on that you would notice are the lovely seats but aside from that it isnt much different to an S Line. Personally I was in the market for the new S6 expecting it to have the same engine as the RS4 and RS5. I am no longer wanting one (current S5 owner)
I was picking my kids up from some school summer play scheme thing last week, and as I sat there watching the convoy of diesel powered Audi Q5/7s roll in to the carpark it suddenly struck me why Audi may have thought diesel powered S estate cars would be a good idea.
An estate car isn't impressive enough to the Jones's though. Even if it does have more impressive badges and silver mirrors.

Aside from the petrol/diesel argument (which will doubtless rage for ever - personally I think an 'S' badged car shouldn't be a diesel but can sort of see the logic), I can't see anyone wanting to own one of these much after the warranty expires, given all that complexity.
Will they end up in the 'Brave Pill' feature when they're 6 years old, perhaps?

They are fake on the Mercedes too.
If the C43 is anything to go by, I think that depends on whether you tick the AMG Performance exhaust option or not. They're also not quite the same level of "fake" as the Audi ones- IE the holes do at least roughly translate to the location where exhaust gases are emitted.
