Breakdown Cover - what's what?
Discussion
I've been an AA member for six years and have finally got sick of the annual argument over the price. This year it went up by more than double because I had the cheek to use it. My argument that it was never discounted below the initial price on the previous non-claim years fell on deaf ears, so here I am, adrift...
How are folks going about breakdown cover these days? Recommendations welcome.

Speak to your bank, they may offer a packaged account with breakdown as one of it's benefits. I'm with Natwest and pay £20 a month for travel insurance, mobile phone insurance and Breakdown cover.
£13 with Nationwide.https://www.nationwide.co.uk/products/current-acco...
If you want to use TheAA at least appear as a new customer each year and use topcashback. This might mean switching to a different company for a year before going back, if you cant sign up in your wifes name etc... Also claim topcashback if you go with another company.
Never paid more than £30 a year.

I’m with Green Flag as it comes as a benefit of my NatWest bank accounts. I have used them three times and have been impressed with the service on each occasion - car recovered within half an hour of each breakdown. The added bonus is that Green Flag cover me for whatever car I am in, driver or passenger and includes home start/recovery (although I don’t know if this is common to all their policies).
The last time I was recovered was an evening time on a Friday when the garages were closed. Green Flag recovered the vehicle to my home and then pitched up first thing Monday morning to take the vehicle to the garage of my choice. Brilliant service.
I used to be with AA and got sorely fed up of them taking an hour to turn up with a normal van just to inform me of the blindingly obvious (which I had told them on the phone) that the vehicle can’t be fixed at the roadside and needed to be recovered which then took up to another hour and half or even longer. Crap service.

I just renewed mine and they matched the online new customer price - was about half what the renewal price was. I've got the absolutely everything included, including breakdown repair cover, though.Never paid more than £30 a year.
I got fed up with AA and RAC renewals and changed to a single-car policy with A-Plan, about £45 for my TVR including all the relay/onward journey type of cover. I guess the relatively expensive AA policies make more sense if you want personal cover or family cover on any car you’re in, but otherwise they seem ridiculous and their tendency to reward long standing customers by trying to charge more is a bit wearing!

I use Autoaid but I've just checked and looks like the price has jumped up to £59.99 since I renewed. However that is for both Mrs GD and I to be covered for driving any car.
Blimey - didn't that used to be £20/yr?Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
