Price inflation is no way in line with inflation. It is all about the tech. I paid £10,250 for my brand new Clio 172 cup in 2003, albeit through company car scheme so heavily discounted. List was £12995 IIRC.
In terms of pure inflation the equivalent car should be circa £16,000 (based upon list of £12k). Obviously £16k wouldn't go any way to putting you in a brand new hot hatch nowadays and even if it did it wouldn't be as good as the cup was as it was fantastic!
BoE inflation calculator takes a £13k RRP in 2003 and it would be £20190 in 2018 moneyIn terms of pure inflation the equivalent car should be circa £16,000 (based upon list of £12k). But when I paid 8k for a prereg 172cup with a cracking px deal on my fiesta, it didn’t feel like a lot of money at the time. 25k for a hot hatch now feels absolutely barmy.
You would have to compare that with an ST1.... Which of course nobody wants.Car wow quotes for a 5 door ST2 in Magnetic are currently 19.5k or 20k more locally.

Plus salaries haven’t gone up with inflation for many.
