Had my current car for 4 years now. Used the same MOT centre every year without issue until this year when I thought I'd try someone closer to home; a halfords test centre within walking distance. Well it failed on the headlamp aims being too high, which seemed a bit iffy when it's never been an issue before. I then noticed they got my mileage completely wrong on the certificate, at the time I was on around 58,534. They put down 66,708... Wasn't a happy bunny but I took the car to my regular paid £40, they turned the headlamps down by a notch and passed it.

My slight niggle now is that whenever some does an MOT check on the car if I ever put it up for sale, there's going to be an inconsistency from it jumping up from 53k miles, to 66k, back down to 58k which could lose me buyers.

I’d want to get it changed.
Why should you have to explain it away come selling time?

I believe if you go back to the test centre within 7 days of the test, they can correct it on the system. If you are still within the 7 day period, I would get it corrected otherwise just leave it and be ready to explain it to any future buyers.

That would put me off buying.
My mileage was 26k a few years ago and they put 260k I left that as it was obviously a mistake. Yours looks like clocking.

If you're outside the time limit for incorrect mileage. You'll need to contact the DVSA directly.

I had it years ago. They asked for proof of mileage (I took a photo of the clocks) and sent the certificate back to them. About a week turnaround and no problem.

Cheers guys. Had the initial test on the 7th so 10 days is today. I'll call the DVSA anyhow.

I'm guessing this is a relatively common piece of human error - if you're typing in dozens of mileages a day, multiplied by how many MOT stations there are around the UK, some of them are bound to get it wrong time to time.

A few years ago I had my car MOT'd and the mileage was recorded incorrectly - 115,692 miles turned into 116,592 miles. I only noticed a few months later but in the grand scheme of things, 900 miles isn't really the end of the world.

Mines incorrect. Clocks were changed 10 years ago and then mileage was recorded incorrectly. Didn't bother me when I purchased it. I have paperwork to prove correct mileage anyway.

While it's not something I care about myself, if it bothers you, yes, see if you can get it sorted,

Def get it changed.

I've mentioned this in the past but I bought my wife a Panda with 10k on the clock but when we came to sell it, the dozy Mot man had entered 100k instead.

It out buyers off despite me explaining that it's hard to imagine anyone putting 100k on a Panda in less than 3 years.

Saying that, it was actually pretty good on the motorway.

I've just sold a car with the same issue on its history (Reg: FV10UYA). Audi dealer had entered the invoice number as the mileage rolleyes So jumped about 30k and back down. I was looking into getting it changed but just left it. Sold it to a private buyer last month without issue.

It occurred to me, after saying that I would deffo get it changed, that I actually don’t bother looking at my MOTs to the extent of checking the mileage!

I suppose if there is one MOT that is an obvious discrepancy mileage wise, it’s not so bad.

This exact scenario happened to me on a car I used to own, didn't really bother me and I had no trouble selling the car either. I just explained it in the for sale ad, but I can see why that might potentially put people off.

If you're not happy, then have it changed.

The problem is there are lots of car check sites and they highlight any MOT mileage discrepancies (as do HPi)

Whenever I've looked at high value cars I've simply dismissed them if there's any discrepancies on Hpi, MOT history etc...

Last thing I want to be doing is trying to explain to buyers the stories about mistakes on the history.

Sadly it's very common, I wonder if some of these MOT testers have decent eyesight.

I've sold hundreds of cars to main dealers.

Start telling them about mistakes/mileage discrepancies and you get a "sorry, not for me"

Happened to me earlier this year, ring them up and they can change it. All very easy to do.

Well done.

I never managed to get a mistake changed.

DVLA said it was down to the MOT station.

Hpi down right refused to change anything.

This is going back ten years or so, great news if they've lightened up a bit.

Nonsense. Testing centre can only change within 28 days.

After that it’s s DVSA and their requirements are ludicrous. The mileage on my car is still lower than the recorded mileage 8 months after the test (which is when I noticed as the discrepancy was a few thousand, not 10s of thousands). They won’t change the recorded mileage.

They said they will only accept an emissions test or service invoice from within +/- 1 day of the test.

So if you don’t happen to have services and MOT aligned or the garage just copies their error, you’re out of luck. I typically use a trusted MOT centre as I don’t trust servicing garages not to “find” items (experience).
