Earlier today on the way home I overtook a lorry carrying, amongst other interesting vehicles, a Lamborghini LM002. I know it's probably been asked a few times before, but are there any other interesting "experiments" that car manufacturers have done? The other car that comes to mind is the VW W12 concept car, but as that never made it to production it doesn't techincally count.

Off topic, but I had a radio controlled Tamiya Lamborghini Cheetah when I was a kid, similar to the LM002. I eventually sold it, I wish I hadn't! I believe they're worth quite a bit now.

How about Mazda persevering with the wankel rotary in the RX-7, RX-8?

If you look at the origins of the Mitsubishi Lancer (1973 onwards). Mass market (Asia centric) produced 4 door saloon. Very dull, very boring.

Then they went a bit nuts with that model and ended up hitting the ball out of the park, producing arguably some of the worlds best 4 door performance saloons.

Do these count?

( I suppose that's said of any manufacturers performance line though)

This was a bit wild at the time, especially the interior.

Other colour schemes were available

Never occurred to me that Mercedes have adopted the Lagonda interior for the latest A Class...

Clio v6 would have been my shout. To a milder account, see also Renault Avantime...

This could just be a bit weird, but I’ve always liked the Meriva VXR just because it seems the most unlikely car to get a performance version

Go back a few years- Citroen. Pretty much everything they did was a bit left field and different- Traction Avant, 2CV, DS, CX...

If you're talking MG, then the MG XPower SV-R surely trumps this!

Pretty much every TVR from the Cerbera onwards was a "bit wild" in looks, interior and performance, so much so that I suspect most of us think of them as normal...

...for a TVR!

See my post a few replies up. Or do you mean the one-off mid-engined, gullwinged Bulldog?
