Nissan Juke more practical than a Ford Focus? X4 more practical than a 5 series? GLC loads more room than an E Class?
You've got your classes mixed up a bit there, Juke is probably more Fiesta size, X4 is 3 series sized and GLC is C Class. The GLC actually is roomier than the C Class as it's a touch wider. My mother is getting on a bit these days and finds the GLC easier to get in and out of than she does a C or E Class
I do see what you mean in terms of different classes. I suppose I'm thinking of it more along the lines of what you can buy new for your money. I would imagine a C220d is cheaper than a GLC220d for example.

Thinking about it, I’ve taken the sport over som e really rouged terrain, the kind that makes you think it might topple over and it’s not......but would I want to do that in a suv with a fabric roof? Hell no. It’s not really a SUV then is it?
So a soft top Defender (or any defender) isn’t any use either? If you Roll any car it’s a bad day all round.
Are these not the ultimate in style over substance, chosen to follow the fashion crowd suggesting a shallow approach to life? They look dreadful like many convertible versions of regular models - pitiful cars.
Nothing new there though, I seem to remember open back Vitara's driven by (admittedly attractive) plastic babes back in the 90's.

No one needs more than basic transportation to get them and their family from A to B at up to 70 MPH. Anything more is superfluous and unnecessary.
But where is the fun in that?
The car industry (and many others) is built on pretentiousness and egotism.

These are right on the edge of the scale hence the ridicule they attract and the purpose of this thread.

You could argue that also applies to those who slate them. Reading the unoriginal comments on here, "skip, bathtub" etc, I suspect lots of people hate them because hating them is the really treny position to take, so you can ride on the same bandwagon as Chris Harris and co. Everyone wants to be in the cool crowd, and hating them is cool. '

Willy's Jeep, Series 1 Land Rover, Austin Gypsy, Toyota Land Cruiser, SJ410.
Arguably fitted a roof and comfort options is pretentious. Having a rag top is being purist.

IIRC weren't 4x4s intended to be soft tops?

Indeed, all of those were designed for a functional purpose and happened to be sans roof. They were utilitarian first which strangely makes them cool now apparently.Willy's Jeep, Series 1 Land Rover, Austin Gypsy, Toyota Land Cruiser, SJ410.

Was the Evoque designed for functional purpose? Was it F. It was automotive burberry to start with and taking the roof off simply sent it over the cliff.

I've never been accused of trying to be cool and am in no danger of achieving it. Maybe people can see through the bull and that's the real reason?Everyone wants to be in the cool crowd, and hating them is cool. '
I had a J-Top (soft top) Pajero (Shogun), its V6 3litre engine + huge chunky tyres made it huge fun.
No idea what it’s original market was supposed to be in 1995 when it was made, but I do know that I sold it to a bloke with a villa in Portugal who said that Left Hand Drive ones were far more expensive to buy there, so I guess that means they were popular.
