Everytime I see one of these it is being driven by a d1ckhead who is cutting people up on the road.

They have a very very very bad image problem up here.
I think a lot originally went to wealthier folk who liked the idea of an Audi A3 that went like the clappers, but they have started migrating down, into the hands of folk who like making a lot of noise in town and city centres, there is an Orange S3 round here, obviously tuned and looks really fast but see the chimp who owns it probably doing 70/80 in a thirty, absolutely batters it round at night.

You know the type, baseball cap turned backwards, head at an angle and a bit of a scowl.

At that price point now it won’t be long before they’re dropped, blacked out and sporting a pops and bangs map at a retail park near you.

God those wheels are dreadful. Looks very dated now, too.

Reading the article and the comments here ,it seems they are driven but the questionable of society, chew through consumables and a Golf R is a better choice all round.

Does anyone have anything nice to say about this car? idea

Unlikely, as most of PH is BMW's very own fan club.

The engine is epic and it’s a nice place to sit, super practical and with winter wheels I had no problem driving at 60 in 4” deep snow

I think it looks better than the newer cars which are getting fat to fussy for my tastes, I liked the red rim wheels tongue out

If I could put the 5 pot in my a45 I would have perfection

Those alloys with the red inserts looked crap at the time and have aged poorly...
They never looked right to start with. It's just a set of decent wheels away from looking great IMO.

Fab engine but the car leaves me cold.

There were looking very old and dated by the time the RS3 was released, especially the interior. The wheels with the red inserts looked crap then and they certainly don’t look any better now.

I don't think you can track them due to that engine making them very nose heavy...

The chav wagon of choice for the local youths around here, I admire the engineering but I know it would be a deeply bland car.

Could never understand the twin pipes instead of the trade mark RS oval

I remember a car mag back when this was new pitching it against the 1m front cover jobbie..not in same category but there was feck all else happening and it was a German v German thing I guess

Needless to day which car won and which is a tad more expensive now

Liked them but the different size tyres front and back was weird

It was a proper skunk works car, taken of the line and modified to take the 5 pot, given wider track etc. I guess it was easier to fit an RS2 type back box

The later cars are straight production line

A fast car, no doubt about it. However most articles I read about them make them out to be a rather dull drive unless darting from nought to sixty-two repeatedly is your thing, which seems to be the case for most I’ve seen on the road.

I saw an S3 of similar vintage earlier today with the atypical driver behind the wheel: holding the gear through town feathering the throttle until the pedestrian crowd had reached critical mass at which point the individual allowed to the car to change up eliciting one of those irritating ‘fffrrrrrppppt’ noises that all dual-clutch performance cars seem to make these days. That alone puts me off these cars and their ilk, up to and including the latest offerings.

Like you've never acted a bit of a tit as a young lad in a nice car

Pffft the amount of looking down that goes on , on these boards is ridiculous !

If you are put off a car based on the small percentage of drivers then that is cutting your nose to spite your face.

People act like tits in all types of cars. Not just younger lads in VAGs.

True. But VAG stuff tend to be for those who like easy speed.

The average Golf R/S3/RS6 etc driver would soon crash something remotely challenging to drive i.e. something which requires even a tiny element of throttle sensitivity.

Id say it’s not a small percentage, most of them are driven aggressively.

Most of the ones you see.

It's a very small percentage of overall owners.

I just really detest the way posters always talk about a certain "demographic" in such a negative way completely forgetful that they too were young and stupid once , and no doubt were they young and stupid today they would he doing exactly the same thing.

Just because when they were young and stupid all you could buy was a 1.6 Ford cortina and now you can buy a 300hp hot hatch... times haven't really changed.
It's very easy to belittle the younger generation.

I must be grumpy this mornin :-(

Yeah i do agree there.
Thankful these modern day cars have excellent safety systems.
However we are maybe a bit older / wiser / more experienced.

I work opposite a car wash,
Every couple of hours a high powered Audi
Usually an rs3 or an s3, gets leathered past there,
Showing off to the blokes who work there,
Absolutely leathered, with foreign lorries and a bus depot with 25 metres,
It’s a miracle that nobody’s been killed.

Of course.

Everyone is an expert.

Even the fat office worker who drives an Insignia but thinks he's a driving god anyway.
I've noticed that it's always the people in no danger whatsoever of buying things that tell us how atrocious those things are whilst shedding an old Fiesta or something. tongue out
