Anyone recall Jones At Waltham Cross in Hertfordshire

Great place in the mid 60's. Sundays were days out for whole families. cars stacked 5 high and wobbling like jelly and never cme away without getting what you wanted.

People wandering about borrowing bits of kit , or you would hear 'Need a 7/16 whit' and the reply would come back either 'Yes mate over here' or 'Try the bloke by the 54 Zodiac over near the hut'

AND getting it returned no problem

Lovely memories

I remember one near my folks in Whitstable in the late 70's that was set out like IKEA every car in its own grassed space like a caravan park
That was someting and it you wanted something underneath ( as i did when i was upgrading the Dolly to an overdie box and needed the prop and cross member from an auto one) they rolled up with a fork lift and tipped it for you. Then when you were finished they put it back. Luxury you could work on any car in your best suit and not get dirty.

Bobbing Car Breakers in Sittingbourne, Kent still allow you to do this, although you need to wear a hard hat which they can provide. Was weird at first walking through rows of cars piled up on top of each other, some looking a bit precarious!

Used to go here as a kid, remember collecting car badges in my little toolbox. Don't think much has changed.

Dad used to send me up to the cars at the top of the stack as I was a bit lighter so it would wobble less!
Ah, Mally's... The times I've wobbled atop a tower of cars in there. And for the other poster, yes - it's very muddy indeed. hehe

Burtons in Northamptonshire near Molesworth still let you remove parts.
Been going up there for over 30 years, in the early 90s if we had heavy snow we used to buy a runner that had just come in, thrash it around the B roads until the snow was gone and then sell it back to them. No paperwork of any sort involved laugh
Bring your own hiviz or they’ll lend you one if you stick something in the charity box

Last time I looked Warminster was not in Dorset. I thought trentys had stopped all that years ago, hope you're right, I need a few bits from them.
I said NEAR Warminster not in Warminster, the scrapyard I was refering to is in Dorset smile

Langfords and Charles Trent (Poole) no longer allow you to enter the yards. I guess this is spreading to almost all scrapyards nowadays.
They both most certainly do still let you in for self selection, not sure where you heard this!

For Birmingham parts hunters........

Hoppers Salvage in Witton (hi-viz provided, no WC, easy free parking) - Pity they dont list cars breaking on their old website......
Copes of Earlswood (near M42 junction with Alcester Rd) (no hi-viz required, No WC, easy free parking)
ABC Salvage of Tipton (no hi-viz required last time I went). No WC, free on site parking but getting in or out off the main road can sometimes be tricky

All are old skool yards where you can walk around and take off what you like. Cars stacked up to 3 high so dont wear your Armani jeans or posh trainers. I weat my "sts" when I go a hunting for parts.
One younger guy at ABC who sits right near the point you have to walk past to get to most of the cars can be a cocky so and so though and there are cheaper breakers out there unless you are desperate or can stomach bell jars like this. You know the sort of ignorant twunt......he will let you walk right past him for a good 30 yards before calling you back "what you looking for?" or "can I help you?" ........well you could woken up mate 30 yards earlier when I walked straight in front of you......he has always been the same. Long hair - you cant miss the guy - sits on the right as you go in and turn right.

Looms near Derby is possibly one of THE best walk around breakers yards remaining in the whole of the UK. The website really helps avoid a wasted journey and you wont find cheaper pricing (no connection other than a regular customer there). Also plenty of free and easy nearby parking and they have a WC behind behind the tyre shop (near the now unused cage). Hi-viz provided. They should sell tea, coffee and bacon rolls at Looms! Its always buzzing and so much choice. Oh and they dont stack cars - this is a bonus so no climbing. Many cars that are stacked you often find you cant get right underneath or open the doors on.

The black country used to be chock full of these yards but most have gone or are now parts counter only type places so thumbs down......

I think there are still a few yards in the Saltley viaduct area too but havent been for years but they used to let you just wander around.

If youre old enough you will remember the row of yards down by Winson Green prison near the railway lines....one used to be run by Pat Roach of Auf Weidersehen Pet fame! He was a big guy you didnt want to mess with.......when I think back though the old yards were lethally oily and slippery so pretty dangerous. If anything yards should now be allowing more walking around not less because they are much cleaner and better organised but thats nanny state for you.

I say no WC but of course use your imagination for the darker/quieter areas of the yards.......

I miss the Charles Trent salvage yard up in Nottingham area. That used to be a walkaround. Not sure if they moved it all and closed the site. Theyused to have a site in Rugby.

As far as I know Bridges at Pease Pottage, Crawley let you wander round but only at weekends because they have big forklifts working round the yard during the week.
You used to just have to be careful not to be run over Mon to Fri but Elfin safety's taken over.

This place just outside York is still open for clambering about.

I've not been for a few years, but they're a helpful bunch and will tip the cars if you need to get underneath etc.

I did hear a few years ago that the local council wanted to close down Langfords citing environmental issues, apparently when they tallied up the cost of the clean up they decided to forget the idea!

Being local I used Langfords once but found them expensive so went elsewhere the next time I needed anything

Langfords (very much nearer Shaftesbury than Warminster!) don’t let you pick bits off but will let you wander around the yard with them to point at the bit you want.

There's a good one in Aberdeen, Persley it's called.

Proper old school, chap sits at the front in a make shift hut with his dog and a wee wood burner. Everything costs a multiple of fivers. Go up to him with whatever you've got and he'll just look at you and go "Two fivers" "3 fivers" etc.

Need a high viz now but that's only come in to play in the past few weeks.

Both of furbers have long gone, both the one at Whixall and the one at child's Ercall.

Spent many hours in both sites over the years.

Hughes in Bicester, Oxon.

Not piled up these days but a good selection. You can wonder round and remove the bits yourself just like the old days. Oh but you have to wear a provided yellow vest haha.
I had no idea Hughes in Bicester was a walk around one even though I have heard of their business as it's extremely close to banbury. I ll make sure to pay them a visit next time I m in Bicester.. thanks very much

Charles Trent do indeed still have a yard in Rugby, and they also have "all you can carry for £30" days, though on a specific, more limited selection of cars in one area.

Looks like it is Rugby that is still open for DIY rather than Poole.
