Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk | Spotted

Still the most powerful SUV in the world, now available for the price of an X3 M...

Even if you only harbour hate in your heart for the concept of an ultra-fast SUV, it's hard to dislike the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk on spec. Any car which boasts a 6.2-litre supercharged V8 is worthy of begrudging respect; when the V8 has 'Hemi' written on it and outputs 710hp, you might be inclined to give it the benefit of the doubt were it stuffed into the bowels of a combine harvester.

The presence of the 'Hellcat' unit, already made very famous by its deployment in the Dodge Challenger, ensured the Trackhawk a certain level of fame right out of the gate - further gilded by SRT's declaration that it was in the business of building the fastest SUV in the world. That sort of claim has since become as nebulous as fastest six-year-old in the world, but no matter. The Trackhawk gets to 62mph in 3.7 seconds and thunders onto a claimed 180mph.

Either figure would likely have been strong enough for Jeep to shift 20 examples in the UK - and so it proved. The unexpected cherry on top was right-hand drive, making the Trackhawk a credible choice for the British buyer even with the potential for truly obscene fuel consumption. At the time, Jeep figured its 2.4 tonne blunderbuss capable of 20.4mpg; an NEDC rating you'd assume is at the NeverEnding Story end of its reporting.

That's all part of the fun, of course - and it's fair to say the Trackhawk is fun in a does-what-it-says-on-tin kind of way. When Matt drove it last year, it was on a cold, damp runway and the left-hand-drive press car still clocked 100mph in 8 seconds and the quarter mile in 11.6 seconds. Which is mighty fast for a svelte, low-riding super-saloon, let alone something with the aerodynamic finesse of a chest freezer.

Factor in the absurd deliciousness of a proper supercharger shriek (not to mention the comforting thought of a full manufacturer's warranty) and overlooking the Trackhawk's less persuasive qualities must've been child's play. "An absolute beast when you put your foot down," is how our seller succinctly puts it, and he would know.

Unfortunately for him, a move overseas has meant his time with 1 of 20 has come to an end prematurely, and with just 1,500 added to the clock. His misfortune is likely to be the next owner's gain because alongside five years transferable warranty, three years free servicing and five years roadside assistance, the fully-loaded, Diamond Black Trackhawk has already lost around £12k in depreciation. That hardly makes it a steal - but it adds to the small pile of things to like about Jeep's own Falkor.

This appears to be massively overpriced for what is simply a fast Cherokee. When will you ever use that performance? Ownership for those with a majority stake in a Kazakh oilfield.

You could say the same about a G-Wagen, Range Rover Sport SVR, BMW X5/6 M... It's different (especially being 1 of 20) and I'd imagine the Hemi is no worse on a run than any of the above mentioned fast SUVs, though I'm sure it would drink in town.

With the cars you mentioned you do get a bit more quality/upgrade in the cabin or trim levels. The Trackhawk just gives you significantly more shove. I wouldn't discount the fun factor, but not for 77 grand. With just 1.5K on the clock, the seller has not found many opportunities to exploit the performance, or the frequency of petrol station visits has been painful

Makes more sense at £20k in 4 years I’d think. The performance doesn’t make up for the lack of badge prestige at £80k IMO

Typo or ISWYDT?
I really like the idea of Hellcrate. Lost Marvel superhero, discarded spoof heavy metal band name, funnycar class dragster?

Is the cabin quality that mediocre on a standard Cherokee? I only ask because the Dodge Ram Hemi seems to be of decent enough standard inside and has all the extras you expect. Valid points raised though!

I really like these, much more interesting than some mundane Audi.
It would be interesting to see a comparison with a Stelvio Quadrafoglio, the Alfa has less power and torque but is much lighter so the performance figures are almost identical.

There's a lot of value in a little extra fuel when it means you don't have to drive and be seen in an Aldi thumbup

If you're overly concerned about things like badge and prestige... move along to other brands.

Everybody else: What's not to like?

20 mpg (imperial UK gallons) on the motorway -- not unreasonable for 707 hp

0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds

tow rated to 3266 kg

all the adjustable driver aids and wizardry

won't be two of these in the car park

as an owner of a GD overland I love these way more than RR etc. Father in law has a new RR the interior is way better but not 50k better and so if I lived in the UAE or USA this would be something I really wanted. It gets over looked by the Bentley, lambo, etc but I believe bar the last few mph this is faster.

A twin turbo v8 diesel that sounds pretty amazing and has 900 Nm torque (more than the Trackhawk in fact) is not to be sniffed at though...

I'm not normally an SUV person at all, but I really fancy one of these. They just feel very exotic to me in a way that nothing else in the class really does, badges be damned. I remember reading somewhere about the insane amount of engineering work that was needed to get the Hellcat powertrain into a GC body, and that definitely added something for me.

Genuinely, if I had all the money in the world and needed something practical, one of these would be the first test drive.

I like it- I openly admit I can't afford it but in another few years when its lost 75% of its value it will be a blast to buy one.

Not a typo a hellcat engine can be bought to go in other cars and they call it a hellcrate
