Hi Guys,

Yes passed my test late on in life, a massive massive huge problem I have is the fear of loosing my license. My girlfriend who has been driving 10+ is pretty much sick of me, going on about speed cameras. The other day I refused to drive somewhere due to there being too many speed cameras and this sent her on a wild rant. I actually plucked up the courage yesterday to drive down a road where theres a big yellow speed camera, but going passed it I was damn nervous even though I was doing like 25mph passed it and it was a 30 road.

Now I get that a simple solution to this is to not speed (lol) however there are times when I mistakenley drive 1-2 or even 3mph over by accident then when I realise this I instantly drop down. I then spend my time worrying if for those brief seconds I somehow got caught by a camera and this worries me for ages, even now I am debaiting if I was caught this week (even though I have no recolection of being over the limit). I usually drive under the limit if I'm honest, so I'll do like 28 in a 30 never really spot on 30 as its not hard to go from 30-31 mistakenly so to be safe I just stay at 28.

I was not aware of all these precautiouns prior to driving my own car (maybe because I had the impression if I was speeding in my instructors car it would automatically be is fault), I did not know half the time I would need to watch out for all these cameras, it just never really occured to me until the license was in my hand, and if I'm honest I always thought it was 12 points to lose your license regardless of whether you are a new driver or not, not frigging 6 which can be accumilated from just two speeding tickets.

What I want to know is, whether there is actually any tollerance specifically on mobile speed cameras as I just think it would be so unreasonable to get a NIP for 31/32mph in a 30, if this is the case then it seems very very shady as they must make ridiculous amounts of money from this.

Did you not go past any on your diving lessons and test?

Not that I seen, I never once noticed the big yellow cameras anywhere when doing my lessons/test.. but again this could be simply because I did not care about them then, I guess ignorance is bliss and all that lol

Interested in why you think I'm joking? I'm not joking in the slightest, I guess the fact it took me 4 attempts to pass makes the thought of having to do it again frightening.

Welcome to driving in 2019. If it’s any consolation I’d been driving for 15 years (speeding every day) before becoming a cropper for doing 79mph on the A1M.

To be honest, if you get caught by a big yellow box at the side of the road you deserve it. It’s the sneaky bd Mobile cameras you need to worry about. For this I recommend using “WAZE” app.

Tolerances vary but generally you are allowed 10%

Worst case scenario you lose your license and pass your test again...

Make sure you fully know what the standard National speed limit is for all types of roads. The Highway Code or any government website will tell you this. If you are in an urban area, where there are maybe a few 40 limits, make sure you are certain it is 40 by looking for repeater signs, until you see these repeaters, assume it is 30. (Yes that was my last Speed Awareness Course nugget)
Watch out for 50 limits on single carriageways.
If you are tailgated and feel ‘pushed’ to go faster than the speed limit, don’t. That tailgater will not be paying your fine.
If you are waiting at traffic lights and an emergency vehicle is coming behind you, DON’T go through the red light to help it. A red light camera may catch you, three points. The emergency services are trained to wait and (should) switch sirens off, or find a way round. Someone will come on and say it may be your dying mum/sister/aunt in the back - it does not really work like that.
The NPCC (National Police Chiefs’ Council) recommend a tolerance of plus 10% plus 1mph before a speeding fine is proposed - so at plus 10% plus 2 mph a fine maybe imposed. But don’t rely on that, not all Police Counties accept that, and neither does Scotland. Modern speedometers are getting ever more accurate, and only read 1 or 2 mph over, so don’t really too much on any over-read there. Be aware of downhill runs approaching towns or villages, speed can creep up there.

As I said above, you will probably annoy a few people behind for a while until you get better at judging your speed. That is their problem, don’t make it yours.

No worse case scenario on PH is you can’t spell ‘licence’.

1) Always know what the speed limit is.
2) Drive at or below it.
3) Chill the fk out.

I dunno they’ve got sneakier here over the years.

But I’ve also noticed the general public are keener than ever to make it clear they’re around by driving really slowly and flashing lights to let you know.

Clearly the tide of public opinion has well and truly turned.
Not ideal but NYP have clearly taken the piss and people aren’t happy.

Some cars are fitted with automatic speed limit sign camera identification and limiting controls. I doubt they work all the time but generally reliable and might ease some anxiety. Otherwise I suggest you probably need to consider some counselling.

Probably as a young new driver, OP does not have that on his car, and if so would have said.

- drive your car more to get used to it
- don't be in too high a gear: because you;re less likely to notice the speed creep up.

i.e
driving in 3rd gear at 30mph it requires greater foot travel to creep over that then it does driving at the same speed in 4th, or 5th.

To be fair, if it were up to me, I'd have not allowed you to obtain a licence anyway.

Maximum of 3 attempts to pass and must be done by the age of 25 would be my criteria.

If you can't pass either of them, you're probably not going to be either very adept at it or be interested enough in driving to improve your skills to a decent standard.
