Damn, nearly 40 comments - and not a single negative among them: this has got to be a record!! wink
I was thinking that. I think it proves that although fast and expensive cars have their place, its the simpler, less complicated, more chuckable ones that often leave the longest (favourable) impression!
It'll be like the recent Nova SR thread in 15 years time.

Downsides? Tyres are an odd size and expensive. Very low geared, 70mph isn't far below 4000rpm, but it's not too bad - I've driven mine to Newcastle from Staffordshire. A little rattly. Runs better on 99 RON fuel.

A great little car though.
I just posted about it being my favourite car and couldn't think of any downsides but yes, it would have benefitted from a 6th gear, which I think they remedied in the next version. I think the low gearing on the motorway was its only foible. Loved the thing.

I get its an annoyance, but I always thought that the 5 speed box and ratios suited the car perfectly, especially with the old school hot hatch vibe!

Really great cars. We've got a 2007 Swift Sport that we've owned from new.

Engine managment light at last MOT was probably EGR valve (we've replaced this twice). Another weak spot is the ABS pump which can fail due to poor design and isn't cheap to fix (we've had 2 recon units). For the >115k miles we've had ours it's mainly jsut been routine maintanance.

I don't agree that they wear the front tyres quickly - I think it's really light on tyre wear. We got almost 40k miles from new before replacing a pair but it was being serviced by Suzuki at that point and they rotate the tyres which evens out the wear
What tyres do you use? Need a front pair for MOT in November, it's got continentals on now but they are very expensive. Cheers.

I own a 2010 Swift Sport, same model as advertised here, and nothing bad to say about it. As others have said it could do with a 6th gear which is on the next generation but put some music on and it really isn't an issue. The only thing I've found is it's not so great in the snow. It also suffers from a common problem with the emissions system reporting the OBD Code P0420. Almost everyone in the swift sport owners group on facebook, which is very helpful btw, has come across this, most just clear the code and carry on, business as usual. Great little cars, there's a reason the 'ring rental companies use them wink

They're great on track too! I chased one all night at Teesside autodrome and couldn't get passed. Misfire above 5000rpm when hot is my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Fella said all he'd modded was removing spare wheel and air con.
Went there in mine just a few weeks ago, great track for a first timer but quite hard on the brakes.

I get the code on mine - I replaced an o2 sensor, made no difference. It pops up occasionally, then I just clear it with a cheap OBD reader. Car runs great. I really fancy a Simota filter, make it sound that bit better.

This or a Twingo 133. Which is best? Could do with something small for chucking the dogs in and not bothering if it gets dirty or not.

I’ve tried several “more modern” 205 GTI equivalents

None have come even close to the feel and feedback of a good 205 - I’d recommend you try one first - if it does let me know and I’ll buy one
Agreed, it's not a bad car the SSS but it isn't a patch on other hot hatches, I used to drive my ex's when she bought it new and it was gutless low down, wasn't pleasant to rev the nuts off it to move slightly quicker. Also, the steering has a weird feeling at the dead ahead position and the gearbox isn't nice between 4th & 5th. When closing the doors it reminds you of a 1980's Fiat Uno too.

However, for £1200 i'd buy it, what a bargain!!

We stuck with the Dunlop Eagle F1's, which were OEM fit for years - it handled so well I didn't watn to change anything. However, I changed all 4 to Falkens a couple of years ago as I couldn't source the right size of Eagle F1's at the time and I don't notice the difference. Perhaps a touch let outright grip but very similar. The Falkens are a touch cheaper but you're probably unlikely to get a bargain as they're an odd size. When the car was released, I think the only one other car had ever been sold in the UK with that tyre size (Fiat Punto turbo - not exactly common), so sourcing tyres at short notice used to be a nightmare. It's easier now though

I've always really liked the look of these. I'm just not sure I could quite bring myself to trade in my mk7 Fiesta ST for one. I keep thinking that I should have owned a Swift first, before I was spoiled by an abundance of mid-range grunt...

That looks like a decent amount of fun for that money.

OK it's probably not as good as an equivalent Fiesta ST, but for £1200 you can't complain much.

My mrs has a white Swift Sport and she absolutely loves it. Its a rare car, its been with us for 18 months and we've yet to see another one in white. Her one and only complaint is the lack of 6th gear.

I have one for sale if you want to buy it? I fitted it to my girlfriends sport but she didn't really like the noise, its done about 500 miles and I have the official cleaning kit for it too. (it sounds immense)

Remember when these came out the base model was £7,799 IIRC. Really wanted one as a first car at the time but was obviously way out of the price range.

Still love em' now and would consider one like this when it's no concern to put miles on it, especially considering you'd probably be able to knock the price down closer to a grand!

I bought an old 1.5 Swift SX as a first car for one of my daughters.

Good to drive, nice ride and handling and a smooth revvy engine.

Pretty well equipped, with central locking, air con, alloys and keyless ignition.

Paid £1200 about 3 years ago for a 57 plater. It's now done 85,000 miles.

Surprisingly cheap to insure. Nicer to drive than my wife's Mini Cooper and almost as nippy.

Been pretty reliable. Needed bottom arms and discs at 75,000 miles, which is fair enough.

Only surprising fault has been a rear wheel bearing. They are pressed into the brake drum rather than living on the hub.

A common fault seems to be squealing aux belts and from memory the two belts are very slightly different in length.

Very straightforward to service. No timing belt. Engine uses no oil between services.

At 12 years old it shows no signs of corrosion, though the rear brake pipes were looking a bit scabby, so have been liberally greased over.

A really good and underrated car.

Had one of these last year, same age with 70K on it, took it to a certain Triangle in Wales, the perfect car and yes, the motorway jaunt from Southend was a bit of a drag. The seat bolster seems to go on all of them, and the clutch was certainly high on mine, buzzed to the redline with ease and turned in like a Kart, excellent fun and spare change to buy - fun for pennies.

Suzukis are the definition of chuckable, they also work remarkably well on our rough roads.

Awesome little cars these! I bought a 65 plate last year as a sensible car and honestly it’s turned out to be one of the best cars I’ve owned. I’ve owned a 205 Gti and totally get the comparison. Its not the same but they do have a definite 80s hot hatch feel about them, nice well balanced chassis and no massive tyres or rock hard suspension. You can really throw them around and have fun!
They’re not a motorway car, even with a 6th gear they aren’t quiet at 80+ and any modern diesel will leave you for dead in a straight line, but so much fun everywhere else.

0-60mph in 9 seconds, and £235 per annum road tax.

I'm not surprised these are so cheap now. Who in their right mind would go for that?

I imagine that this is a lot like my current daily (MK6 Fiesta MP165), or at least something between my car and the older Ignis Sport. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face if it is, although 27mpg mentioned somewhere above sounds pretty poor!
