RE: Renaultsport Twingo 133 | Shed of the Week

Maybe someone can change my mind about these but I just don't understand why anyone would buy one over a Clio 1*2.
It's the same floor plan, shares many of the same parts, but... sits fewer people, doesn't come with leather, has less power and also has a smaller boot.
To quote Chris Harris, tell me I'm wrong...

I think you're more likely to get a nail if you go shopping for 1*2s at that price bracket. Insurance for a young driver as well, aside from that, the 1*2 is literally the same platform underneath but with more power so I would be inclined to agree. It's the same floor plan, shares many of the same parts, but... sits fewer people, doesn't come with leather, has less power and also has a smaller boot.

However having owned its rival (mk1 SSS) there is something VERY fun about how these fizzy little warm hatches almost demand to be driven at 10/10th constantly.

Good point well made. I guess personally i'd look at it as a cut price 197 / 200 of the same age, given the 1*2 will be much older. It's the same floor plan, shares many of the same parts, but... sits fewer people, doesn't come with leather, has less power and also has a smaller boot.

But yes, realistically a 1*2 would be the better buy.
Great little car. It my be the slowest and cheapest of the Renault Sport family, but it is definitively capable and a real cracker at fast driving. My one is fitted with the cup chassis option and it is the best pound per fun car I have ever had. The individually moving back seats make this car very practical as well.
This standard car is absolutely capable on track days and can take a lot of abuse. Quite an achievement for such a cheap car.
Gearing is very short. Great for real driving, loud on long distance runs.

When new, I imagine this would have been cheaper to insure and marginally cheaper to run (shame it didn't get a 6 speed given it came a few years later than the end of Mk2 Clio production though. It's the same floor plan, shares many of the same parts, but... sits fewer people, doesn't come with leather, has less power and also has a smaller boot.

As you say now, today, I don't understand why you wouldn't just get a 182.

Considering I've owned my Twingo 133 from new and still own it, I somewhat forget how old these are. Mine is a 2010 Gordini edition which basically meant stripes, full leather and a couple of other niceties. Which was never quite the point of the 133 but quite nice to have...
I've often heard the Twingo compared to the 182 Clios and there are some similarities of course but the 133 has it's own merits.
Ok so it's only 131bhp but in many senses of the term, it's an old school hot hatch. It's light, unrefined and only has moderate power. It also handles brilliantly, it turns in really sharp and the gear change is nice and sharp. Subjective I know but I think the RS Twingo looks better great too.
Quite an underrated car and one that once you've driven you realise has loads of character.

Lot wider track with different suspension set up and alloy bottom arms. Laguna mk3 front calipers running 172 discs. Clio rear discs set up. The seats are also really good. My son had a GT and my 133 is world's apart from that.
I had a GT. I can vouch for their crashability. Always wanted a 133... This is very tempting.I had my eye on these before buying my Panda 100 HP. Purely anecdotally, what I noticed most about the Twingo on the used market is that almost all of them were in the Midlands or the North of England. Very few down south.
Not sure what bearing that has on anything, other than putting me into the seat of a Panda that was about 10 miles away.

From my own experience of 10 yr old Renaults, a very risky buy.
I have had three Renaults that were 10 years old, two of which had to be scrapped due to faults that made them uneconomical to repair. The third is currently heading this way and I suspect it's current MoT will be its last!
All have been riddled with stupid design faults that can make a job that would take an hour on another make take a day on a Renault.
A car to buy at this age if you only expect to get a years motoring for your money and then throw the car away!
And yet you went back and did it again........ 2 more times!!! Something doesn't really make a lot of sense here.I have had three Renaults that were 10 years old, two of which had to be scrapped due to faults that made them uneconomical to repair.
