RE: BMW M8 Competition | Driven

Seriously??? I really don't see someone in the market for a McLaren looking at an M8C/AMG GT4 type big 4dr 4/5 seat GT.
I agree and they are different tools to do different jobs I reckon. If you are looking for a very fast GT car then the M8 will be on your shopping list. Whereas If you are looking for an unreliable Supercar then the McLaren will be on your shopping list. So many of the new breed of fast cars do little to excite me. I really feel that we are at a threshold with ICE cars with all of their crazy power figures and twin-turbo engines, yes they are mighty fast, more often than not too fast to really use on the public road and yet you are so removed/insulated from the actual driving experience that there is little fun to be had. So if you buy one, then the joy of actual driving cannot be a high priority, which begs the question why buy it in the first place unless purely for the benefit of show/new tech/warranty/service plans? Those that actually yearn for a pure driving experience will be looking back at the greatest hits of cars from the 90s/00s when cars were pretty reliable and yet still analogue in their experiences.
With the current crop of super cars/coupes/convertibles it feels like they may as well skip a generation and just embrace the EV movement to better illustrate their crazy power/acceleration figures as they go about it with such little drama/emotion anyway.
I'm not against EVs at all and I think the perfect 2 car garage would have one as long as there was a young-timer analogue fun ICE car sat alongside.

I don’t actually mind it, but then again I quite like the 8 series which I think look better in the flesh than in pictures.
However, you’d have to be mental to buy one. The depreciation, even with discounts, is going to be utterly savage. It’s trying to compete in a market which isn’t really BMW territory too. I’ll be amazed if they sell more than a handful in the UK.

I looked around a 840d at my local dealer and I really liked the shape, I think that it is a decent looking car in fairness and they look nice out on the road. I guess that this will but even more so. chelme said:
If I were in the market, feeling like I HAD to have a big, heavy BMW M, the M5 would make more sense. It actually looks better for a start, and it is practical too.
I tend to agree, if not the M5, the M8 would make more sense as a 4-door... some luck, there is an M8 Gran Coupé inbound Well, it will be beautifully put together, reliable etc and it's certainly fast. But, it's also too big, too heavy, too thirsty and too expensive. I've been a "car guy" since I was fourteen and drove my first car, a 1936 Morris 8, round a paddock at my home. I'm 71 now and still like cars, my present car is a Mini JCW, but even I can sense that the writing's on the wall for this type of car. Like it or not, the world is moving in a different direction, big changes are coming and we're going to have to find a way to live with them.
What is it with the Competition versions and horrific wheels? They all look like the have far too little tyre and always look completely tasteless. I appreciate that I don't have a degree in graphic design, so my opinion is completely invalid, but is there anyone who actually thinks the wheels look good?
WANT.
The Gran Coupe version will make the perfect car for me.
I don't agree at all with any comment that it doesn't look good. I really like the new era of BMW styling and in years to come I really believe people will change their minds, big grilles and all. It's just that it's a big departure from the accepted norm.

I'm genuinely surprised by most of the comments posted. I think it looks great, very purposeful and love the wheels too. If the next M4 looked like a scaled down version of this I'm sure it'd help shift them.
Pricewise it's too much but let's be honest, no-one will pay even close to list - minimum 10% off and if recent times are an indication of BMWs pricing (think M5) then over 20% may be on offer.
Whilst it's an M car, it's still an 8 series so the weight is what I'd expect these days. Closest competitors are similarly weighty. I also see it as a grand tourer more than a proper sports car (despite it being an M car, taken on the track and being very able based on the article). Competition isn't McLaren surely? Maybe a 911 Turbo but for a grand tourer many will insist on a V8 and perhaps slightly more presence. S Class and perhaps Conti GT are more likely rivals for most buyers I suspect.
Assuming people are paying little over £100k for an optioned up one I think they'll sell well enough. It'll be about monthly payments for many and I suspect they'll be good deals to be had. They could well sell to people who want a more mainstream car for the week who have a supercar for the weekend.

What does this offer over an M4 Competition in the real world? A second less to 60? It’s largely immaterial.
It seems like a depreciation disaster in the making. The interior seems to be more or less the same as the latest 3 Series too...
Having been loaned a 840d convertible and a new 320d by BMW while they were working on my car, I can tell you the interiors are miles apart, although they have superficial similarities. Lots of leather rather than plastic makes for a noticeable difference It seems like a depreciation disaster in the making. The interior seems to be more or less the same as the latest 3 Series too...

That said, no argument from me that it'll lose money hand over fist - it'll be an absolute steal in 3-4 years time though!
