What is it with the Competition versions and horrific wheels? They all look like the have far too little tyre and always look completely tasteless. I appreciate that I don't have a degree in graphic design, so my opinion is completely invalid, but is there anyone who actually thinks the wheels look good?

I'm ready to get fisted by the anti BMW usuals.
No need. I agree with you, I think it looks amazing based on the base 8 that I occasionally follow near Goodwood. I'm ready to get fisted by the anti BMW usuals.
I also think it's brilliant that they still make cars like this even if it wouldn't be my choice at that budget.
The institutional hatred for all things BMW is getting tedious though.

Can you really call a car a Competition, talk of its "precise interaction between powertrain, chassis technology and aerodynamics", suggest there's been influence from an M8 GTE race car, then make a 2,085kg cabriolet version?
This annoyed the hell out of me with the M5C - but I don't remember PH criticising that for abusing the Competition label, even though it's 1945kg and has 4 doors. As I said at the time, I'd be a little embarrassed to tell people I had an M5 Competition whilst driving around in something the size of a yacht. They might as well have called it the M5 Smallpenis.I don't doubt that the M8 is very good, up to a point. But that weight is huge. Clever chassis engineering can only go so far, and can never really hide that.
The M8C would look far better with nicer wheels too. "Competition" seems to be the German word for "Chavvy wheels", they're bloody ugly and haven't suited anything they've been used on yet.
I'm sure it appeals to someone, but like others I can think of a lot of other cars I'd buy ahead of this if it were my money.

Well, it will be beautifully put together, reliable etc and it's certainly fast. But, it's also too big, too heavy, too thirsty and too expensive. I've been a "car guy" since I was fourteen and drove my first car, a 1936 Morris 8, round a paddock at my home. I'm 71 now and still like cars, my present car is a Mini JCW, but even I can sense that the writing's on the wall for this type of car. Like it or not, the world is moving in a different direction, big changes are coming and we're going to have to find a way to live with them.
Reliable modern bmw? Haha!Almost every new BMW thread starts with
1. Overpriced
2. Ugly
3. Dynamically inferior
Few years down the line, the same car is
1. Decent value with discount and dealer contributions
2. Pretty/ good looking/ distinctive in a good way
3. Almost/ is best in class for handling.
Classic examples:
E36 M3
E60
E92
Future examples:
F80/82
Guaranteed.

Wow, it looks like almost the exact same car. Did BMW just buy a Mustang and copy the sheet metal whilst fitting their own interior? It's like those Chinese copy cars with how similar it looks to the Ford.

This is a pointless comparison. If you put every single 2 door coupe up as a side shot they'd all look similar, so berating this one model when it's an industry wide "problem" isn't really justified.

Good one. Of course they look roughly similar in their overall shape and proportions, it's the same concept and layout. Just like this:

That can even be to satisfy the need to convey grotesque ostentation.
So the designers opinion is irrelevant in their professional context without you knowing the brief.
So design can be fairly judged by anyone, especially if they’re in the target audience.
I liked(d) BMW designs/cars. Halo models should appeal to me.
This doesn’t.
It’s challenging in a bad way.
I see nothing but contemporary and cliche design cues throughout, with a lack of cohesion between parts.
