Rear arm rest down. Just about to go for drive. Only issue is the passenger side wing mirror won't fold in or out so that will need sorting. MOT isn't done, despite advert, so can't drive away today anyway....
Sounds like an excellent bargaining chip.
Indeed.

I’m going to wager the forecourt will be of the Shell variety. Always nice to treat a new purchase to the good stuff for the first tank before invariably drifting towards supermarket brands. Right?

Good luck LS460Ross!
Read a little bit above winkhehe

For the first time ever when it comes to buying a barge....I've been sensible

Saw this elsewhere and thought it would get some appreciation here. If they’d made this I think it would have been close to the ultimate estate car of the time. No US demand sealed its fate I believe:

Gosh I think that is splendidly well done. I have never seen that before. What's the full story?
That’s in the museum at Gaydon I believe, along with numerous other Jaguar styling exercises and prototypes.

I'll take that bet, certain in the knowledge that I will win it simply by reading the post 2 above yours.
bks.

The curse of the refresh mid-post.

Good feedback though Ross and certainly sounds like it’s been worthwhile.

Good spot 0a. That looks very honest and rather appealing. Nothing too scary there, even for a biff like me.

If I had access to alcohol out here I'm not sure I could trust myself not to bid.

Definitely worthwhile.

I have done some sums and if I hit a bonus at work this month (it's going to be very close....it's worth about £500 after deductions) then there's a possibility I'd buy the Lexus in December if it's still for sale. Basically, I don't like being a low on money, I've got a few things I'm saving for and like to have some for a rainy day. Basically if I do I can put aside a minimum of £1200 per month....which means I'd effectively have £1200 more to play with in December than what I do now. So yeah.....if it's still available after I have been paid at the end of this month and if it's still for sale then I will quite possibly buy it.

Looks great and an honest-sounding, no-nonsense seller. Lovely.

But....the LS460....What did I think? Firstly, it looks better in the metal. You open the door and a nice smell of leather. The seats are magnificently comfortable and very adjustable. The interior felt better than it looks in my opinion and I was surprised at the seating position, it could be made fairly low and made you feel nicely hemmed in. It did feel special. I played around with the toys to ensure everything worked which it did (except the mirror).

Took it for a drive....the engine and gearbox are wonderfully smooth and quiet. The steering is crazily light...something I would have to get used to, and the brake pedal required a fair bit of travel to offer a huge amount of bite. I much preferred the steering and brake pedal feel on the E65. It was very quiet at speed, similar to the E65...if not even more so, but I'd be splitting hairs..
I think the light steering is likely because they used EPAS for the LS460 (iirc) - makes it easy to reduce the effort, useful in Tokyo/congested Japanese traffic.

The brake pedal sounds the same as our Subarus, I wonder if it's a Japanese big-car expectation. Long travel but lots of power behind it.

Sounds like a great machine, go in with a good haggle in a month or so and see how you fare. Taking a bath for a few hundred quid will start sounding tempting for any dealer just before xmas, the prospect of having it for at least another 3 months will be offputting.

Okay, a bit over budget... but a 34k mile w123 in a nice colour. Slow, but I like it https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-W123-1980-3400...

That looks to be in terrific condition and doesn't seem too expensive to me, but will inevitably need re-commissioning at some cost. Nice colours.

Not as nice as that one, but a girlfriend of mine has discovered this in Portugal and we're tracking down the story. The owner died and it's filling a (very expensive) parking bay in his old apartment block. I rather think it might have my name etched into the dust to serve as local transport if various plans come to fruition.

Exactly. It was a really nice car, it comes with a 6 month warranty and being a local dealer that is very appealing. Having a warranty with a dealer 200 miles away is almost pointless.

I really hope it hit my bonus this month and it is still for sale, I would almost certainly buy it. Sensible me says I should probably wait until I don't need to part-ex it with the Toyota, then flog the Toyota separately and get more money for it, but that could end up taking ages to sell and I could be dealing with a load of pond-life. I may try and bid £4850 and then £5000 if needs be, but we'll see what happens. I will know a lot more RE work in 2.5 weeks, it's very touch and go at the moment.

But yes....a truly magnificent barge. Can't believe how low it revs in 7th on the motorway, 70mph comes at around 1700rpm hehe

Oh, it also had the fridge in the back....which is actually mildly irritating, it certainly reduces the boot capacity. It just means if I want to carry my bike it may have to go on the back seats rather than the boot (with a dust sheet of course!).

Looks nice and well cared for, although don't personally like the mkIV wheels on a mkII.

Life has got in the way the last few days, so catching up... I will have a look on mobile.de so thanks for those suggestions.

We took the 7 today to drop off SL1 at a (new for me) man to finally resolve the roof issues. Side by side comparison on the M58 would suggest that while the SL is by no means slow, the extra 130 or so hp in the 7 means it just walks away without trying. Hardly scientific, but good fun. The fact that in the time the 7 hits 100, the M6 is north of 125 means I won’t be doing an SL/M6 comparison! Acceleration is hardly the most important metric in a barge, but it is one of the most easily tested.

The man has/had an interesting frontage...

Most showed signs of being sat a little while, sadly. (oh, and that’s a 55 and a 65 next to each other).

SL2 is on track to arrive in CY next week too. Shipping & Customs is going to be around £1400 all in, and I’m awaiting feedback from the equivalent DVLA. I have a feeling that it’s going to be around €2500 to tax it for a year over there - will likely be spending a lot of time on SORN! Expensive, this hobby of ours.

That would annoy me on a car I cared about. Guaranteed I'd end up with chainring marks on the leather and tyres rubbing the headlining.

Sounds similar to my Crown, steering very light and suspension very soft until I hit the sport button, brake pedal also has long travel before fully biting.

He's had it for a month, what are the odds it'll be there in 3 weeks time I wonder?

In reality, it is actually a seemingly good price and the recent history is very good (suspension work, exhaust, services, rear brakes, tyres are very good).

I could afford it now but sensible me says wait until pay day so I've got a bit more behind me. But would I end up kicking myself if I wait 3 weeks to find it's gone?

Basically..... If I may go into my finances here if I assume £5100 for the car plus £300 for additional insurance and tax so £5400 and then BEFORE pay day I would be left with £3100 or so (plus £5k which is in an account which isn't quite so readily available.... Would need to go in branch). So I could afford it I guess but that money is in various accounts which are meant for holidays, annual insurance/direct debits etc.

If I DON'T hit my bonus at work I'd be getting paid about £700 more than I'd need for the following month to top those accounts back up.

Argh I'm so torn! Tempted to text him and say "get that mirror fixed, get an MOT on it and I'll pick it up next weekend hehe

Do it. When you're on your death bed you won't be thinking "I wish I hadn't bought that Lexus a month too soon"

Ross. I'm a Lexus fan but I'd caution against stretching yourself for any car. These things aren't rare and they are getting cheaper with time. If you've got financial plans then stick to them. Certainly don't let us encourage you to take on a commitment you're not comfortable with. If it's tight, don't do it.

If you can sleep at night it's a different matter.
This car sounds a good one, with a reassuring local dealer and history, and you of all people know to seize the day. Just don't be rushed.

Thank you smile

As you say, there are others available and I hadn't anticipated buying a car now anyway. If it's there in 3 weeks time it's there. If it isn't, it isn't.

As the son of a guy who had a Jag but, nearly, not a home to park it outside, I'd echo CdeG's comment. Financial security is more important & useful, long-term, than a more pleasant way to do something you can already do.

Also: dooooooo eeeeeeeeet!

Kidding.

Go with your gut instinct, but IMO you may find another one but if it isn’t local you’ll have the hassle of travelling - I now search autotrader and ebay etc in distance order - I used to travel for hours to be disappointed- family life means I just can’t be arsed to deal with car seller BS - private sellers can be as bad as traders.
