That’s the one!

I’ve just seen your PM and have sent you a quick reply. Thanks.
What's it like on fuel? You've done quite a lot of mileage since the mot in Jan so surely it can't be that bad right?
My commute is certainly not what the vast majority of people will use the car for (40-50 miles each way) of pretty much exclusively M25 & M23, minus the short stop/start trafficy bits getting on/off the motorway. The trip computer was reset circa 8k miles ago and the car claims its achieving 31mpg. Some quick fag packet maths on the odd fill up confirm this to be pretty accurate. On a recent trip to Scotland at 65mph on the cruise the whole way it did 35 brim to brim.

I would hasten to add however it wouldn't take much town mileage to bring this back down to reality mind.
That's really not bad, is that with the earlier 5 speed auto or the later 6 speed?

But.....65mph to Scotland? Are you mad!? I'd be tanking it in an LS430 hehe
Mine is the 5-speed. I believe (happy to be corrected) that the 6-speed didn't come until the facelift.

Unfortunately my job is dependant on having a clean licence... so it's very much waft mode for my long journeys. Which is part of the reason the LS suits my driving style so well.
Once you have the motivation to do so, it must be bliss driving unhurried... however, is that 65mph on the GPS or 65 indicated?

Out of sequence reply to em177 but just wanted to say thanks for your detailed PM reply yesterday. I am mulling how I can fit a round trip to Crawley in. Also mulling whether I want to hold out for a facelift given your car does look properly stately in the dark cherry red.

2x SAAB 9-5 estates for your delectation

Top end and above budget but potentially justifiably so and nice colour combo: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2...

Near bottom budget: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2...

Really like these in estate form
About the first one, which insurance company would you need to speak to about the mods? Adrian Flux? Asking for a friend.
How did I miss these? The first one is more or less the holy grail of 9-5 aeros. If it has the HK audio upgrade then get it bought!
I'm curious, share your knowledge on the Abbott Racing models!

Mine is the same colour as em's but I have black leather and, as someone here described it, eye-popping wood. I have a flat spot on the bonnet but it's a really nice colour and suits the bulk of the car I think.

In terms of realistic mpg, I have averaged 28 over a mix of very short journeys from cold and cross continental cruising over 18 months, so I expect that to be very typical.

They are impressive things and I strongly recommend them for those of a bargey disposition.

Forgive me, but I don't think it's the kind of car to try and get nice again - accept the scuffs, don't wash it too often, just shed it along until something critical breaks then get rid of it.
You're spot on, but shedding isn't my thing, although I accept the logic of it. I don't mind a car not being gadget laden, and I don't necessarily use all of those fitted, but if it's there, it must work properly. Likewise, noticeable scuffs and dents irritate me; OCD, I suppose.

Ed Abbott is local to me, a former Jaguar development engineer, and extremely knowledgeable about making Jaguars and Saabs go very quickly.

The workshops look a bit agricultural from the outside, but are well equipped and staffed. Son # 3 had a few things on his Saab sorted out by them, properly, first time, and at very reasonable cost.

P38 4.6 with working rear VHS. Get in! Pricey at £3700 when not mint but has potential.

Am I the only one who sees "rear VHS" and all bets are off, I have to have that car.......

Similar levels of want would apply to a 7 series with the fax machine option, which shows the level of the disease, it would even make me buy a BMW......
Ben, my w220 s600 has a fax machine .... rare option when new cost £2k I think. I even have spare rolls of fax paper in the boot!
OK that is my faith in Mercedes restored. I look forward to buying it from you in future wink

The Barge Gods have been merciful and my X350 has passed it's MOT with no advisories!!

It can have clean oil and a set of filters as a reward.

How is it along the concrete section of the M25 (around Guildford).

I do the reverse commute and parts of the M25 do my head in.

I sometimes take the gtv v6 on my 50+50 commute M23 then M25 and 30mpg is reachable if no stop start traffic

I quite like an E-Class with a proper engine but I've avoided every generation of C-Class as I've never been in one or driven one that wasn't, at best, disappointing in many important areas. They seem to manage a totally different style of ugly and/or tasteless both inside and out with each new generation.

I'd make an exception with this generation for a C63, but I think the seller has hit the tone perfectly by taking the pictures in the half-dark at a scruffy-looking depot.

i've enjoyed plenty a C class journey - one thing though - i always think the C/E class parking system a bit crap with the lights on the dash - at that level they should be optical....

FWIW, my E class sounds as though I have flat tyres on summers, let alone winters.

Does this engine eat it's camshafts (like previous V6 petrols)? Although with that mileage showing it probably has been past that stage...

I actually prefer that method - I always wished I could turn the sound off on my W211 as the visual indicator was more than enough.

I think the pre-facelift C class interior of that interior looks positively naff. In fact, no C class has ever really appealed to me. The 190E is nice enough (but I would have to have more than the 2.0, I personally found that engine incredibly dreary) but any other C class....nah.

Finally got to drive the x350 4.2 v8 today. Comments from etypephil and stickleback123 were a great help. Thanks guys! Sadly its just too far gone for my needs so it's onto the next candidate.

Maybe getting influenced by the Lexus-fest there has been these last few pages, but I have found a decent looking LS460 close by https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201... . Any thoughts?

Doesn't have the ML stereo sadly but is a good colour combination, decent price and (allegedly) has FSH.

Has this been posted previously? I notice it's been advertised since 17th September which could be a concern.

If it’s reasonably close, why not take a look and a test drive? If nothing else that will give you a feel for the model and something to compare with any others you may consider.

That's a shame - what was wrong with it?

I rather like the LS460, but I suspect it might be a bit too "barge" for my tastes. I really must try one.
