Rent a Tesla S from Enterprise - £200 for the weekend, and no fuel costs as you can use the Supercharger network for free. Obviously it's worth checking out there will be Superchargers within range of where you are going, but 200 mile range gets you most places within the UK with only a single charge.

And check with the rental office how much charge will be in the car when you pick it up.

Worth trying it once.

It's definitely on my list to do.

Has anyone used Turo? There are some interesting cars on there.

"a trip from the south coast up to Scotland" is a bit more than 200/400 miles? There are plenty of chargers (not sure if they're super or not) on the West/North coast of Scotland though.

Macron and Krikkit, thanks for your thoughts.

I think that the single malt whisky affected my thought processes last evening.

In the cold light of day I see the sense of Macrons suggestion of hiring a car for the rare long distance trips, and keeping my Skoda for cheap local motoring.

It looks like I shall not become a bargist.

The wheels on that S500 - vomit
Plenty of options at a lot less than a W221 though - you can still pick up an LS400 for less than two bags which would make both cheap and wafty motoring with minimal bork risk.

Or something like this:

V8, wafty, people won't assume you need eye surgery.

A 3.0 X350 would be my choice I think. Proving over time to be reliable and remaining more than presentable and comfortable.

I live near Manchester - it works for me. But I get your point.Still worth a go if you can get it to work.

That is a genuine 35mpg+ car on a long run, and not known for any real mechanical issues. Not so good around town, of course.

Must have had a very "powerfully built" owner: my one had 160k on it and the drivers seat and interior were in far better condition than that. Not a big deal for 2k though.

That's in a vile state- mine is nowhere near that bad at 160k. It's also unusual in that it's an SE but with the "soft grain" rouched leather that was standard on the Super V8 and became standard when the Sovereign model was introduced for a later model year - it was an optional extra.

It wouldn't get me to Scotland - But is a brilliant idea for a weekend trip to Dorset, just to find out what they are really like to drive.

To be honest I'm tempted myself, just to see what they're like without any pressure.

I wasn't necessarily advocating that one (although a bloody good clean and maybe even a replacement seat would still be cost effective), just a good example of how cheap X350s are getting now.

What is the view of manual boxes on the W124?

Used to run a 190e 2.6 that was manual and it was probably the worst thing about it as it was slow to use, awkward with the handbrake and too long geared overall.

I may have just answered my own question!

If you're expensively converting a Jag to manual, wouldn't just about everyone do it to an X308R instead?

It wasn't expensive he bought the parts and a local garage did it in a day for £250
