But the bottom one is a generation older so can't really compare. And that generation is pretty shoddy as S classes go, in general.

The real issue was that the XJ40 never came with super-funky velour. Walnut picnic tables can only go so far...

I got the column extension function on my Lexus going today, by the simple expedient of fiddling with the joystick until it awoke from its slumbers. And the speedo took a snooze but came back online.

Exactly that. They didn't make the W221 S Class until 2006 so the plate is private.

Doesn't detract from the somewhat impressive mileage though. Looks like it was well below average then did abount 50-60k a year for the last two years.

A very comfortable way to do that kind of mileage. I have recently bought a 2008 S320 and it's amazingly refined.
