Fiat, Chrysler, Vauxhall ,Peugeot, Citroen, Alfa Romeo, Jeep and Maserati. it's like putting all the worst car brands together.

Personally I would rather buy a Dacia.

The fact remains, merger or not, if PSA wants to use a great British brand like Vauxhall to sell cars and vans in the UK, then it has to make them here in the UK.
rofl

That'll be Vauxhall/Ellesmere Port fked, and another nail in the coffin for UK car manufacturing, then.

As long as Alfa don't go under the VAG group as has been rumoured for a while then the above seems good.

in theory you could be right - however on the credit side each of the individual companies brings something to their sector. I do wonder if they are trying to be a 'French' VAG?

Cheap 'n' small = FIAT
'worthy' family stuff = Vauxhall/Opel
quirky family = Citroen
semi-sporty family = Peugeot
junior executive/sports = Alfa
big saloon = Dodge/Chrysler (and their US presence)
off-road = Jeepexecutive/exotic =
Maserati
there's potential there (and a degree of over-lap but, if done properly, it could well work

I can't see anything really interesting coming from this.
Part of me hopes for an Italo-American sports car wearing a Maserati badge, but I strongly doubt it.
As others have said, it feels like a death-knell for Vauxhall.

I dunno - they make one of my favourite cars (Challenger Redeye Widebody - and I'd not be disappointed to get a Charger either)

How is this story not on the front page of PH?
This is significant because surely as we go further down the road (no pun intended) of Electric and alternative fuel more and more car makers are going to use shared platforms.
I wonder if we will get to the stage of one brand and 4 or 5 car body choices??

We'll either end up with the Insignia VXR having a colossal V8 in it, or a Challenger with a weedy 1.2 3 pot then! laugh

True. But an Alfa or Maserati with a french engine is also a scary thought. It will just dilute the brands. I don't care if Fiat and Lancia share. But Alfas and Maseratis should stay that and if they share it should be with something like Ferrari. Not Peugeot or Citroen.

Hopefully Alfas and Maseratis will have their own engines and platform.

I agree fully. Big Italian car fan here and only ever owned Italian cars. As long as they have their own engines which I find are very good then fingers crossed it won't be too bad. No doubt some will disagree because "It's a Fiat which surely can have no redeeming features".

Maserati have really gone downhill with the current QP and Ghibli and need to get back to making cars like the last of the NA ones from a few years back. Alfa only have the Giulia and Stelvio to keep them going at the moment and need a new GTV/Spider.

Fiat need a new Coupe, Barchetta and a hot hatch similar to the Strada Abarth. Lancia need a new Integrale, Fulvia and Stratos. I wish management would see this rather than keep on facelifting old models where the opposition are bringing out new, quality motors.

I guess if it is better for the group as a whole then it is good.

Love Italian cars but not so keen no the idea of mixing up with some French stuff. That said I'm constantly being told some decent chassis's come out of France so who knows.

I wonder if they have thought about doing a Citroen with a Maserari engine?

True that.

Moreover, It's certainly a mystery how FCA only use the new - heavily invested - Giorgio RWD platform in TWO (2) cars, Giulia & Stelvio... VW would already been up to 20 models. Why is there no new Fiat 125, 131, 124 Coupe or even Argenta (a cheaper still fun italian mid class saloon) or new Lancia Thema etc etc.. Or even a new RWD Giulietta that actually HAS been rumoured for a long time.

There seem to be trouble at the top, namely the Elkann's and Mr. Manley.
