A 911 would out drag and out drive this but doesn't have that depressing look..
For nearly twice the price, it really should do too.

What a fair comparison and worthwhile comment.

I'd have an original '68 but these don't do much for me.
And those red calipers get on my wick - you go through the effort of echoing the original and then put them on it?

I have to say, there is just something so special about the Mustang. Mine replaced a 987.2 Boxster S and whilst it doesn't drive anywhere near as well, it makes me smile all the time even when bumbling along at 30mph
Agreed.

Even at idle in traffic the V8 Mustang gives that something that is completely missing in 99.9% of current cars.

I guess its a kind of a throwback car - an old fashioned, simple and effective layout with just enough modern features to appeal but not so much as to spoil it.

It feels like Germany has spent the last 10 - 20 years (very successfully) convincing everyone that classical music is everything we need, we must enjoy the subtle nuances of a virtuoso lead on a Stradivarius played impeccably in perfect synchronicity with the rest of the string section, the depth of a full choral ensemble, the power of a brass section. Germany has very clearly demonstrated that our full range of musical requirements can be covered by a sophisticated and highly skilled orchestra.

And whilst that is all very excellent, sometimes you just want to turn up some fking AC/DC and have a good time driving

Purchase Bullitt, take badges off. Sorted - as the spec and colours themselves are actually quite tasteful.

An excellently written article. It's refreshing to hear an opinion of this car that's not biased by comparisons but gives a view based purely on its own merits. Now where do I book my test drive? 😉

A very good article on a very interesting car.

If I had a spare £50K for my next car change my dilemma would be:

1) Green Choice - fast hybrid / EV... that's the inevitable way things are going.

or

2) Highland Green Choice - something like this Mustang... last chance given the inevitable way things are going ..

Have to say a V8 and Manual Gearbox, the Colour, the Cue-Ball Gear Shifter all appeal as much as the other mechanics mods.

As others have said (author included) and as I once said ages ago on some other topic, the Bullitt Badges would have to go... just too obvious... Would you drive an S8 with Ronin badges? The red brake callipers too - generally hate them on most cars, but on this one they look totally out of place in my eyes....

Otherwise - superb car.

These are great workman-like cars that are solid and dont need alot of attention. When they need fixing they dont cost the earth either.

You find that not too many owners have the "I've just paid for Porsche servicing" depressing look.

Great piece Dan.

Whilst we were in Florida in August I explained to Mrs PB that Mustangs were available in RHD and she seemed rather taken with the concept. More so than anything else - usually 911 - that I've rattled on about over the years.

I like this Bullitt addition because I think it's a cracking looking thing in that green. I have to concede though that I've never seen the film. That's bad as a car guy, isn't it?!

I did buy a making of DVD of Le Mans and couldn't get along with that because of what you've alluded to in your first paragraph - I got about half-an-hour in and all we'd learned about was an arrogant idiot who seemed to spend more time dashing off to carry on with his French bit on the side.

Ah yes the new £50k 911. Have they announced it yet?
When I returned to the US and bought a Corvette, friends and former colleagues in the UK were instantly dismissive.

"Should've bought the Ferrari, Mate," one said. The Ferrari was 300 percent of the price.

At the time, he had no car and would borrow his partner's Twingo.

LOL. Yes, American cars have improved massively in the last few years, even if the interior materials don’t quite match up to the best the Germans have to offer (but who cares at the price point?). New Corvette is a total game changer in its home market and internationally, even if the vagaries of import taxes don’t make it massively cheaper than a base 911 in Europe.

You either get the muscle car thing or you don't, to compare the Mustang with a European car means you probably don't. I have to admit Im just a bit of a muscle car fan.
However, show me a hot hatch no matter how good it actually is and I really don't get them and never have. Each to their own.
We are lucky to get the Mustang in the UK, in fact fans in the US are lucky it's still being made especially in this day and age, but for how much longer?
Sadly Muscle cars never had a mass appeal in the UK, mainly due to taxation and probably a higher than usual fatality rate, you really need to respect what they can and won't do.
The only other muscle cars we have officially had in the UK are Vauxhall VXR8's and Monaro's and that's pretty much it.
If these old school cars are your thing then get one as soon as your circumstances allow. Rest assured there will always be plenty of boring cars in future years....to a muscle car fan anyway.

I think the Mustang will be safe for a while yet. Ford are dropping most other "normal" cars to focus on SUVs over there, but haven't they said the Mustang is safe? Just spent a week in the Middle East and there are no end of Mustangs, Camaros, Chargers etc etc there.

I can't afford a Bullitt but I actually prefer the looks of the pre-facelift cars anyway

Mine is in Grabber Blue...

That's lovely. The pre-facelift version like yours is the nicest looking modern Mustang since the one they launched in 2004 or whenever it was. The facelift has really let it down sadly, which would really put me off the Bullitt.
