Won’t be a winning entry like in previous years as my daily is grey this year but here’s my effort anyway.

Was spotless...now filthy. 7 days of my regular commute.

Is it even worth trying to keep it clean???
Might be worth switching that rear wiper on now and again!?
Now there's an idea! I thought it was strange to always have brown cars following me ??
I'm actually baffled that you've not wiped that. It makes me think you're not a very good driver - you don't look behind you. And this is a motoring forum...

As I say, baffled.
Hundreds and thousands of van drivers/bus drivers/wagon drivers/etc manage without a rear view mirror or back window. Doesn't make a bad driver.
Hardly the same, they can't. You're less likely to be driving enthusiasticly in those too. Just marks you out as someone not bothered in my opinion. Very odd.

Bothered about what? You don’t need a rear window. Leaving it filthy dulls the shine of headlights behind.

I have 0 idea what driving enthusiastically and a rear window have in common? Your not on a racing track.

I don't often use my rear window when reversing, just the wing mirrors. And a lot of cars don't have rear wipers by design and get just as filthy.

You wouldn't have more visibility at the rear if its available? Is that what youre telling me?

Am I seriously having a conversation about how its advisable to have good visibility at the back?

Tell me, what other standard fit items do you lot not use? Indicators?

That's what I mean about not bothered. What a load of st about dulling the shine of headlights..

What do you need this rear visability for that your mirrors cant do? Stare at someone in traffic picking their nose?

You said its ok for vans and lorrys to not have it as they arent being driven enthusiatically. What that has to do with rear visability is beyond me.

As another poster said some cars dont even come with rear wipers, you dont NEED a rear window. I drove a car with a giant company sticker covering the whole rear window and didnt feel it was a problem.

Try drive single carriage ways in the country in the dark with all the bumps and hills, you soon get sick of headlights coming through the back window, leave it dirty and its dulled right down. Oddly enough some cars have dimming rear view mirrors for this exact reason.

a) yes, my saloons have not had rear wipers, but the aerodynamics just flow the rear screen clear
b) driving a van with no rear windows can be quite liberating, and those who insist on driving ‘invisibly’ behind - well, that is their lookout.

Guys, I need your advice. I’ve offered to start giving a lift to one of my colleagues who doesn’t drive (in exchange for petrol money) from the next town. My Astra is wonderfully dirty and I think in a few weeks I’m onto a definite winner, but with starting carpooling, should I wash it?
Colleague is also female which is one of the reasons I’m thinking this.

A dirty car wouldn't bother me, especially if someone is giving me a lift (petrol money or not)

Maybe just clean the inside if you're worried, after all that's where your colleague will care most about during her journey.

The inside is clean enough, I had a puncture the other week so all the junk from the boot is currently on the back seat but that's easily sorted and I'm thinking she'll go in the front (you might be able to guess that my back seats are very rarely used). I guess a dirty car is better than the bus. I'll have to wipe the door handles though (yes, it's that dirty!)

Nope, very rarely use a rear view mirror, and I also don’t wipe my rear window as it gets dirty.

I drive a 150t low loader every day and it’s only rear visibility is the mirrors, i don’t have or need the rear visibilty a rear view mirror would offer in that and don’t really need it in the car either.

I reverse using my door mirrors in the car, and a dirty rear window usually means I can’t see the bloke behind picking his nose at traffic lights

If she gets in the back she’ll be making assumptions about what you do for a living.

Or, she wants you to live up to your user name.

When I first started driving I had a new 2003 Clio 1.2 16v (the 16v makes the difference at 17 biggrin) my car was always filthy! Took a girl out to the cinema on a date, she decided to wear white jeans!!

Yep, brown stains off the sills all over her pants as she stepped into and out of the car, not that exciting but reminded me of my younger days biggrin and yes didn't see her again, so clean your door sills at least...that's all my wife is bothered about now when she uses my car.

Personally I do around 500 miles a week, no point washing it in winter as it's dirty again within a couple of days. I'm probably not going to wash mine until March. The majority of my mileage is A and B roads, it very rarely sees a motorway but does get dual carriageways.

Good advice. Reminds me of last winter, my car was filthy and I was picking a friend up from a night out. A petite but a rather drunk girl in a white dress decided to sit on my bonnet as I was at a red light, as you'd expect the back of her dress was no longer white, I did laugh.
