I'm still shocked at the audacity of someone going to a car wash and hoping for his car to be washed - and for the advertised price, too.
Who do they think they are?

Crazy concept isn’t it !? I quite often take my sparking clean car to be washed just so I can get it cheaper laugh

Had exactly this happen to me last week in my van. The advertised price is already inflated to reflect size and amount of work involved. When they had finished (exterior wash only) they guy said it was an additional fiver over and above the inflated van cost, A gentle FRO followed. He told me it was more because the van was very dirty, it wasnt minging, just usual winter muck. I relied saying that was the whole point of coming to a feckin car wash ! He’s smirked and walked off.. tries that line often I would guess.

I’d rather do it myself than have a load of truck wash and gritty sponges anywhere near the paint work

The vast majority of cars will not be that dirty. It's taken months for it to accumulate that coating of filth. If it is a much longer, harder and more unpleasant job to tackle, you can expect to pay more. If you turned up at a hairdresser or barber with long, tangled, messy hair that's going to take far more labour to sort out, then yes, you pay extra. Begrudging a poor sod doing what is a menial, thankless job at the best of times a fiver to cut through the muck on the filthiest car I've ever seen just shows up what kind of person you are.

I took this baby to a hand car wash in South Wales at the weekend; “£10 please sir” the Eastern European gentleman said. “It says £5 there” pointing, I said. “It’s an old sign, and have you seen how dirty your car is?”. I said, no way, and he offered to wash but not dry it, for the £5.

As a point of principle (sad bugger I know) I left the car wash, unwashed. I wonder if they charge less because your car is clean when you go there? Cheeky buggers.

So some poor guy is out working in the teeth of a Welsh winter when some entitled wker rocks up in a rolling mudbath then begrudges him even a fiver just to wash it, let alone a tenner to wash and dry it?

You, sir, are a Grade-A tight-fisted twunt... and I'd bet what little I have that you're rather better-off than I am!

You're the one who sounds like a wker mate. Do you employ a load of illegal eastern Europeans or something? Cash in hand I guess? Personally I find it a joke when places up the price if the car is dirty. That's the fking reason you're there in the first place.
Simple answer:

Swap places for a month, clean every car, every single day, however dirty, however big, however cold or windy, get wet, freezing cold and covered in filth day after day and see how your perspective changes.

Fancy another month there looking forward to the guy that argues about the tiny price?

Car Wash - for clean cars only.
Barbers - no long hair cut here.
Restaurant - no hungry diners allowed.
Iron - not for use on creased clothes.
Keys - will not work on locked door.

How long would you be willing to work for £2? Because that's likely all he will get from a fiver.

A lot less, I'd imagine.

Can you all just get over yourselves?

Any place that charges a fixed cost for something can’t then change the price because there’s slightly different factors, a window cleaner charges the same amount of your windows are 3 inches thick in grime or where only done last week. to clean that car takes no more effort or time than cleaning a slightly dirty car, they pressure wash it off which gets the bulk of the salt off then use a gritty old sponge to get the rest of it off, that’s the same treatment for that car or the next one that’s pretty clean.

If they can’t do it for £5 they shouldn’t be charging £5.

No chance... this is the new PH where car enthusiasts are rare and argumentative k0ck sockets are aplenty. They could stand in a corner and still manage to have a one sided argumentfrown

I take the Shed to my local car wash for an wash/interior clean after a a weeks caving - mud inside the car, driving up muddy tracks. I fully accept that I shouldn't pay their advertised price because I'm reasonable. £5 to me would be a wash for a normal dirty car.

There's a jetwash near me that won't allow 4x4 off roader/green lane types to clean their cars because of the chunks of mud blocking the drains.

PH - Never be reasonable.

They are under no obligation to accept your business, a bit like you can go elsewhere.

A very dirty car does take longer to wash, so its fair that they want more money to do it.

It’s called business... rough with the smooth and all that. Bet the don’t give discount to the not so dirty cars ??

My elderly neighbour drives his BMW twice a week and probably does around 20miles if that. He also takes his car to be washed every Friday even though it is pretty much as clean as the previous Friday, wonder how many turn round and say ‘Hi old chap, car isn’t even dirty so this one is half price today’ ?? Not feckin one would be my guess

All those that insist their cars be cleaned for a fiver remind me of David Leavitt/Target Manager Tori:

As a bonus I have included a picture of my MX5 after an icy morning and salted track at Oulton Park back in February.

Just taking a look through this thread and noticed a familiar looking car!
Nice to see the MX-5 is still going thumbup
Hi Steve, its had a few mods and quite a bit of fresh steel since I bought it from you, almost 6 years ago now! I'm considering selling it this year, but still undecided, small child might be the deciding factor!

The example that a window cleaner or hair dressers wouldn't charge more is BS also as if you turn up with a dreds to your hairdressers for a wash and blow dry good luck getting the advertised £15 price laugh

Can’t the arguments and politics be left for other threads? Keep this one for dirty car pics, it was doing well as one of the few threads with no pathetic arguments in wink
