I’am genuinely impressed and shocked at how well that GSi did. So is the 205 GTi over-rated then ? But it can’t be as it’s lauded as the greatest hot-hatch ever....

I own a well used Corsa VXR Nurburgring and it really is the best car and hot-hatch I’ve ever owned, and i’ve owned a few including the darling Mk7 Fiesta ST.

That SRi, i’d just put some new VXR Shocks and Springs on and send it to RS Tuning for a ‘map.

Cavalier in a frock, looks OK to me.

They were, and are, still ste though. There's a reason the upsurge in 90s coupé values seems to have passed them by.
On paper the 4x4 turbo version seems to have plenty going for it.

On paper you'd think it's some kind of Escort Cosworth competitor, but the AWD system in them is both incredibly agricultural and horrendously unreliable. They destroy transfer boxes, which are NLA and hugely expensive if you can find one. Many, perhaps even most, Calibra 4x4s are FWD only these days.

The C20LET is a pretty decent engine but the chassis was never much cop. The Rover Tomcat Turbo was a better drive and the Corrado miles ahead.

They're not bad looking in a slightly generic 90s way, especially with the Imscher kit.

Pug was an 80’s design and tech. Corsa 10 years later. I’d hope the competition would have got a bit nearer.

Suppose it’s like the Escort Cosworth which is now slower than a new Fiesta ST

I thought there is a solution to the transfer box issue, or a jap transplant? A friend of mine has had one in his barn for years.

I expect an Escos would still drive away from the Fiesta in anything but dry conditions. And be right with it in the dry on like for like tyres too...

There is, you used to be able to get a locking kit for them. Meaning they run constantly in 4x4 mode and doing away with the hydraulics. Made them reliable. Now NLA.

I was impressed by the VXR N’burg too Mike - great little hot hatch

Going back to the SRi - agreed - be good to try the dampers off a VXR first - these SRis already had updated springs - and see if the Lotus tuning had much effect - a good afternoon of ‘shedding’ in the garage would sort it
Going from the EVO write-up it might be a bit better on the bumps even
Quite a bit of headroom on the engine too as said

Considering the road tax/emissions, I doubt very much was done to chop 50 bhp from the output either.

oh dear, i like cars to be reliable and not pieces of st.

silly me, its why all the best cars I owned were made in Japan.

some pretty thick people on this site sadly.
Over the years, myself and my mates have had various Subaru's, all Imprezas, and all were extremely unreliable unfortunately. Great cars to drive, but you can't tar all Japanese motors with the same reliability brush.

Some like Vauxhall, some don't. As a brand, I don't. There is nothing appealing about it whatsoever.

I'm not saying I've reached motoring nirvana and the 159 is vastly superior to anything; in fact it's a pain at times with many form-over-function quirks and the GM-based engine is flawed and potentially ruinous; I knew that before I bought it.

I didn't come here seeking to use my choice of car as justification for not liking Vauxhall. You (SidewaysSi) started the 'what do you drive then?' approach; is my opinion only valid if I drive something that you deem superior to whatever it is I'm criticising?

'It's not a 'real' Alfa; it's FWD' were some of your earlier comments. If that isn't snobbery I don't know what is.

Oh how I do love Vauxhall bashers.

You seem genuinely surprised by the way this discussion has gone. Do I really need to explain myself? Happy to do so if needed.

Please re-read your last two paragraphs - the hilarity...biggrin:
