I'm not talking about the touring car, I'm talking about the regular Cavalier; if you'd like to try and explain to me how the Cavalier was such a brilliant car and how my youth somehow blocks me from seeing that then by all means take a crack at it, but we both know the Cavalier was mediocre at best, excluding maybe the Turbo 4x4.
Cavalier in a frock, looks OK to me.aaron_2000 said:

What did I say about the touring car or the Cavalier being brilliant?Edited by aaron_2000 on Wednesday 13th November 16:47
You made the assertion. You can surely tell us what was wrong with them.
Unless you have no idea (that’s what I suspect) and you’ve made it up because it’s fashionable on this forum to do so.

silly me, its why all the best cars I owned were made in Japan.

It’s a budget thing. Not everyone needs to drive a Subaru shed. As for thick, I’d say you’ve got that more than covered silly me, its why all the best cars I owned were made in Japan.

I'm sure you seen the 40mph wkers you tube footage, plenty of gutless BMWs on that getting overtaking - a turd leaving your stter looks to have better mid range overtaking speed than them pieces of st tbh.Got any new dashcam wker videos to share, I do so look forward to them....

I often rent cars through work and twice they have forced me into a Corsa. Not again, it remains the only car that is guaranteed to give me back ache for at least 2 weeks after.
Every Corsa I've been in has given me intense pain after an hour or two. They must have very talented designers. It would be nice if their talent went in the opposite direction. From now on I will refuse any Corsa offered.
It looks like people have wrongly assumed your age Aaron based on your user name.
I guess if you've driven all those Cavaliers and bought a 405 you must be older than 19 as those sorts of cars haven't been readily available on the used car market for a few years now....
In fairness you've more experience of Cavaliers than me. My only drive in one was a 1985 B Reg Mk2 back in the late 90s which actually accelerated and handled reasonably well compared with, say its Sierra rival. Ahh, the Ford Sierra Mk1, I owned one of those and that really was a bad car!

Guess we'll keep going then. You're correct, they aren't readily available. However, there's always a good few for sale, plenty over FB marketplace which I must assume you don't look at otherwise you'd be well aware. I've never driven anything other than the MK3 so I can't speak for the MK2, but my experience of the Sierra is different to yours. I drove a J XR4x4i and a F 2.0 saph, and although they were admittedly a bit boat like, especailly the soft 4x4, I thought they were pretty enjoyable. Just to point out, I never ended up buying a 405. I decided to buy one but the MI16 I wanted sold before I got there, and the SRi I wanted also sold, so the hunt continues. Wow, heated debate about an old rebadged Opel...
It's not a debate, it's a few bitter old men who can't deal with someone fractions of their age having a newer and fresher opinion than theirs. I couldn't care less about a rep car from the 90's, but for some odd reason they won't let it go. Fair play then
I do actually look at FB marketplace- funnily enough I was thinking of getting an old Cav myself only last year..!!
Yup the Sierra you drove would have been better than my old 1.6GL which was the worst handling car I've ever owned....
Maybe I should stick to chatting with you on the "Joys of running a shed" thread about Old Focus Mk1s, where I can't put my foot in it about peoples ages. Personally I'm not bothered how old you are, my daughter's 19 actually and drives an old Ford. When I was 19, like you I was interested in older and more eclectic stuff than the brand new stuff...
I'll stop now....

I've never bought a car outside FB, bar 2. Like you've probably seen me say on the shed thread, only old stuff interests me. I'm still waiting for the day I find an Orion sheddy enough to really drive every day. I just don't like being one of the few young people on this forum and taking st for it. I'll just put this thread on ignore as I don't wanna waste my time arguing with my bitter elders over their issue with someone younger than them having a more modern and valid opinion than theirs. Middle age? I'm not sure, but like I said I have absolutely no interest in indulging you in your odd issue with my age, so i'll just pop this thread on ignore and leave you to wallow in bitterness and pessimism You seem to think you are hard done by and seem to regularly pull the "youth card". Bit sad really.

You'll probably be waiting a long time as they've all rusted away! And speaking from experience the Cavalier was a much superior car to the Orion , the Cavalier I had didn't really do handling but the mk4 Escort I had somehow managed to be worse, and as for that 'orrible, harsh, coarse, noisey thing known as the CVH engine... (and I'm a fan of most old Fords!)
As for this weeks shed, it's a small, light car with relatively understated looks that's got an engine that's a remap away from 200+ bhp, what's not to like? If it was a Ford, or French, or German, or Japanese, or anything else really it would have praise heaped on it.

I drove 3 before I decided to buy a 405 instead, a H reg SRi, an M reg 2.5 CDX and a K reg with a redtop conversion. Lifeless steering, terrible damping, 3 different gearboxes, each worse than the one before it, an odd seating position and an unnerving feeling of instability in any environment other than a motorway.
I must admit I never found the Mk3 Cavaliers ( as in the flying Touring Car pic above ) that bad as a do it all saloon/hatch. My dad had 3 Mk2 Cavaliers in a row ( Y reg to E reg ) as company cars. All brand new and at roughly 2 year intervalsI thought the Mk3 was quite an improvement driving/handling wise on the Mk2s although the engines were a strong point all the way through, especially liked the 2-litre
When the Mk3 Cavalier was launched, the 405 was undoubtedly the handling champion of the class. Every mag had a 405 group test win but I think the Mk3 Cavalier was usually next in the handling rankings until the P10 Primera came on the scene
I used to often get a Mk3 Cavalier 2.0i like above as a pool car for work for a journey down South . Had a Sierra V6 XR4 and a 309Gti as my own wheels at that time but I have to say I used to enjoy driving the Cavalier - free petrol helped of course but used to look forward to the Shropshire/Kidderminster sections down to the motorway join at Worcester. Engines were lusty and have to concur with the CAR review on that.
Was a tauter machine than the 1.8 Sierra I had for the same journey a couple of times. The vanilla Sierras were always underdamped in my opinion although the sporty ones like the 2.0is seemed a lot better and the steering was nice, especially with the quicker powered racks
By the time the Mk3 Cavalier came along in 88 the cooking Sierras were feeling their age
Once the Mondeo arrived in 93 the roles were reversed and the Cavalier was near the bottom of the ranks
Of course, all this was judged by the standards of the time - most people would find all of these cars slow and poor compared to today’s stuff
It’s interesting to hear people’s opinions on them all - big part of my motoring life - and like most cars on here, there can be wildly differing ‘takes’ .
As an aside from the Cavalier, a friend in the mid 80s used to borrow his parent’s Orion Ghia quite often. Used to really enjoy it, basically an XR3i with a boot and always seemed quite ‘mobile’ at the rear when really pushed. Still want a rwd one like Bertie Fisher used for rallying - had a small footprint on the road but room for 4. Just a nice size for the best roads round here
