It has just occurred to me that I have never seen one of these on the road.

if anything I would say Alfa gets positive bias, given Top Gear used to go on about not being an enthusiast until you had one!
That always was a back-handed compliment, though, because what it amounted to was that they were highly desirable but so awful to live with that you'd have to be car-mad to buy one.

I don't think there is any bias - credit is given where it is due. And Porsche, Alpine and Lotus tend to deliver on a consistent basis. Alfa don't unfortunately - you never quite know what you will get from them.
They can do a great job when they get it right - witness the SZ, marmite looks, but reviewed really well for handling. Performance Car ( pre-EVO time ) picked it over the E30 M3 Sport Evo in their annual PCOTY review...….and they really liked the BMW when it was reviewed....and every time since

I've never driven one but I do like them - I think they look fab.

I've only seen a handful in the flesh; one on the A42 ages ago, a black one at the last PH SS and a chap who has been to a few midlands meets / drives in his, which sounds very very naughty with the optional sports exhaust.

They were pretty much universally panned though by the press.

Oh yes I do love the SZ - the reviews at the time seemed glowing. Definitely one for the fantasy car collection.

I would love a 105 with a TS conversion too.

I think there is a late Top Gear or recent Grand Tour where Clarkson took one around Italy and couldn't stop raving about it. His only real criticism was that it was too wide, and that he didn't like the look of the headlights. But I do think that Alpine have managed what Alfa cold not.

I did chuckle at a previous poster who said that Alpine deliver on a consistent basis. They haven't delivered a car since the early 1990s, until the current A110. That's hardly consistency! wink

I've liked these from afar but never so much as sat in one.
To go through the pains of actually creating the thing in the first place and then not paying attention to the driving experience is sad.
Hard to understand why they didn't put it right.

Some amusing comments smile

Alfa set (I believe) a production figure of 5000 from the start and sold every one. Coupe and Spider. They haven’t done production and sales for Europe for some considerable time, it was only kept on in the US.

The prototype was stunning in its funky paint, unfortunately they release with those horrendous spider eyes headlights. The crowd took an audible breathe when the cover was revealed at Geneva. I remember laughing at Alfa fking it up.

Fortunately someone had a moment of sanity and they put some real lights on it later on.

I’ve put 50,000 miles on mine in the 26 months I’ve had her. She is my daily driver. The interior fits like a glove, there is a st ton of leg room, it’s incredibly comfy and she returns 45mpg sitting at 70ish.

And best of all? It’s not an Alfa - it’s a Lancia! 😎

I love these (and most Alfas), I think the criticism is tramlining on UK roads - which is more a criticism of our potholes etc - and the huge wheels some were fitted with.

I thought they were stop being made a year ago.

As usual, I like to wait until people have lived with them and any issues that come up. I was quite alarmed with potential of carbon tub bolts and long term issues there. I could be wrong but almost enough to put me off.

There was a programme of how the 4C was made - dream cars I think it was called. It was very interesting how the tub is formed.

That is pretty depressing for the Alfa to come that low in a drivers car comparison for sure.

As I said earlier it is rare for a car to get hammered by everyone, and the 4C is certainly a pup. A real shame because on paper its lightweight should have made it a world beater.

Interesting contrast between this;

and this;

I think it perhaps depends on the exact criteria being used.

I don't think i've ever seen one out in the wild either.
Looks like you can get an early one for £35k or so - what was the original list price?

If all it needs is some aftermarket suspension fettling to sort it out they still look a good buy to me for a carbon tub 2 seater.

I've only seen one in black at a car park ... utterly gorgeous and surprisingly wide.

Only heard it idling but even that sounded fantastic.

I've seen a few on the road and they're certainly distinctive. Some of the detailing is nice but the proportions of transverse mid-engined cars almost always look weird to my eyes and the 4C is worse than most. It does seem a shame they screwed up the fine tuning of the chassis because it's pretty clear that with some really quite minor tweeks the chassis has a lot of potential. They didn't help themselves by fitting all the press cars with the ridiculously over-sized wheel option, either.

However good it was or wasn't, it's always a shame to see a car of this type disappear from the market.

Britains best drivers car test and no Lotus in the line up! - how stupid

I think that they usually use brand new cars that have come out over that year. I'm guessing Lotus didn't bring anything to the market that year.

Lotus do usually do well in this test.
