Im trying to get a potential quote for a car I might be buying - but it's showing up as a manual on the insurance database. The car is DCT. Is this a red flag that something isnt right? Or just an error on the database? Its an E92 M3 if that makes a difference, surely none were converted from manuals?

Just one of those weird things that comes up sometimes, my old E46 was an SMG but showed up as a manual on the insurance database and my old DC5 Integra always came up as a Civic despite being an Integra on the V5.

The E46 is a manual with electro hydraulic clutch operation. SMG stands for Sequential Manual Gearbox.

The basis for dct/smg./semi auto / PDK, will all have a standardish manual gearbox with ecu actuation of the clutch/dual clutch/gear change.
Ins companies only recognise these as a manual box as they're not fluid flywheel, hydraulically operated auto's..

Thanks all. Sorted now, looks like it's different interpretations of the same transmission.

To all the people saying DCT and similar are manual boxes...in this context that's not really true. All official documents should really say automatic.

They are all types of automatic box under a specific definition of not having a clutch operated by the driver.

There's a very important reason for this...some people have an automatic ONLY licence. Those people would be able to drive a DCT car legally.

I think that's an internet myth which has developed.

In my drivers manual it said it stood for Sequential 'M' Gearbox. i.e. the same M as in M3.

If there is no clutch pedal it's classed as an automatic.

Same for EVs where there is just one gear - no clutch = automatic.
