Saving things for special occasions

Champagne.
The OH likes Veuve Clicquot and has been given a few bottles over the years for Xmas/Birthdays. She kept them on top of the fridge, for years.
We've actually got round to drinking them this year... all of them were 'off'.
What a waste! Don't keep champers haning around for too long. Drink it quick!

Not so much a thing but when we renovated our house we have now got a nice lounge and also a kitchen/lounge/diner.
The father in law must have said at least 40 times 'you want to save that lounge for best' or 'just save it for best'
wtf its a fking normal lounge
Does best mean, funerals, weddings, births etc? really odd and btw we didn't!

When my grandparents died my parents had to clear their house. They found loads of items still in wrappers that my parents had bought them as presents over the years. Slippers vests, boxes of chocolates. All these items were saved for best. My old man is turning into his father saving things for best my mother goes apest.

Do you save anything for special occasions? Nice bottle of wine / champagne? The nice dinner set? Suit ? Car !!
If so why ? Isn’t life too short to worry and isn’t it better to get the most out of things, after all you work hard so why not enjoy it!
I'm of an age that I'm attending funerals far too often for my liking. If so why ? Isn’t life too short to worry and isn’t it better to get the most out of things, after all you work hard so why not enjoy it!
When it hits home - the number of things you "save for an event" changes dramatically.
My godparents gave me a set of silver cutlery which we only use on special occasions (when we need more than our standard stainless cutlery) because the knives can’t go in the dishwasher.
Other than that everything is used, though my best bike only comes out when it’s dry.
My wife hoards things, not so much saving for best as just keeping for the sake of it.
