I listened to Sam's Behind the glass podcast today, GT2RS vs Pista. Interesting as always, great for while i'm working.

Sam has mentioned that he never bought any of his cars for 'youtube views', he just bought cars as he liked them and added that it's probably why his channel 'fell down' or isn't as popular as his colleagues.

Tony's response was "...I don't think you fell down now mate, I think you made the right decision if i'm honest, I think some of your colleagues are in the sh*t!"

Which of his colleagues are they referring to?
I assume Archie Hamilton, SOL etc... Archie Hamilton had that Range Rover SVR for all of a fortnight or a month before flogging it to a dealer in Bournemouth... perhaps it wasn't his viewers' cup of tea. It must be very expensive to keep switching cars to please a fickle audience.

SOL, keen to keep up with the others, bought an M2 Competition, compared to Archie Hamilton's M8 Competition. With Drive The World, the focus was more on the road trip / holiday than the specific car. Sam has never done the usual churn or build up to what's coming next to the garage. With the inevitable economic downturn, these cars may become a millstone around the necks of some of these "colleagues" in the near future...

Without a doubt it's SOL, I mean as much as his Murcielago is lovely now, it must of seriously ripped the arse out any enjoyment and any savings he had as it must have cost an absolute fortune to put right.

Did he have any recourse with the dealership who sold him that Murcielago?

Doubt he did with VVS. Car was sold as seen and I hope he wouldn’t have bought it if paint issues were showing. Not VVS’ issue that Paul wrapped the car then pulled the wrap off himself and the paint came with it

Sold as seen from a dealership? Do you know Paul personally or are just making this up?

I’ve just listened to the latest STG podcast where Sam mentions having to sell the 911 because he needs the money (much like many people in these current times). My understanding was that he had decided to keep it because it was going to cost him too much to buy his way out of it. Have I missed something?

Perhaps even after the exhaust mod, he realised as much as he wanted to enjoy it, the mileage was too much and it was time to go. It had served its purpose for Drive The World. I'd love to know who bought it. It barely stayed on the stock list at Gravelwood... He was looking at Ferrari's again, but who knows what's next. You don't want to buy something, then the virus returns, and it's sat in storage again. From the last podcast, it won't be a McLaren biggrin

Tim I asked this question in the comments on your Mansory Ford GT video

Do Mansory get Allocations on these cars or do they buy them already spec’d but delivery miles?

Interested to know

The big projects they do are either customers sending in the car to be done, or they buy the cars from the market. They had bought themselves the blue one that I showed from the market.

Doubt it, his fault he wrapped it.... which then ripped off crap paint as removed.....

(Possibly very stupid) question to the YouTubers: When you have timelapse sections with music playing over the top, do you have to pay the artist (or whatever) to be allowed to play the music or is there a bank of free music you're allowed to use?

Royalty free music is a thing. Sometimes you need to give credit to the artist, sometimes it’s completely free to use.

Very complex issue that needs careful attention.

Music on YouTube is a horrible, horrible topic.

I've had periods in the past where I used songs that were fully licensed and legal and then 3, 4 or 5 years down the line I get copyright strikes on them. Unfortunately this keeps happening now and every time it's a few hours going backwards and forwards to fight the claim and try to produce something from a website that probably no longer exists.

As a result, I will never use music in videos again.

Could you put a few tunes together yourself? Bit of guitar or piano? How’s your singing voice?!

There are loads of options of royalty free music if anyone needs for youtube clips, like this - https://www.epidemicsound.com/

For the very rare instances that I use music, I use epidemic.

My policy with music in videos has always been this - for reviews (which is most of what I do), I want to be either talking, or listening to the car making music. If I've got time in a video to fill with 60 seconds of music, that feels a lot like wasted time to me.

There was a notable incident last year where Mumbo Jumbo, who makes Minecraft videos on youtube, got fked over on music due to the samples used - they had full permission to use the tracks from the artist, but the artist had sampled others in creating the tracks and hadn't sought the correct permission, so even doing things the "right" way is no guarantee.
