BMW Z4 M Coupe | Spotted

That superb S54 straight-six, a manual gearbox and the Z4's handsome good looks, still available for less than £20k...

Four years ago, when PH first published a BMW Z4 M buying guide, a good car be had for under £15k. To some extent that stands true today, with two of the ten cars presently on PH ducking under the mark to provide brilliant access to a coupe driven by BMW's legendary S54 3.2. There's definitely been a slow rise in Z4 M values, suggesting it's only a matter of time before its modern classic ranking is established - but we are still in a world where the coupe is genuinely attainable.

That's somewhat surprising, given that from when the model was first introduced to roads in 2006, it was a signal of real intent. The manual's demise had already begun - the Ferrari 599 was launched in '06, remember, with the manual only for a special few - turbos were becoming more comon and cars were getting ever larger. The Z4 M, however, retained three pedals by default, that wonderful M3-sourced engine and a svelte, Chris Bangle-designed body that mated an extended bonnet to a compact, muscular rear. It had presence, style and purpose, and that was just when it was parked up.

BMW's present performance straight-six, the B58, makes a decent enough noise, but the old S54 is another level for sonics. Unsullied by forced induction, the 3.2 produces its best - 343hp - at 7,900rpm, when its four tailpipe exhaust system projects the sort of silky, searing straight-six tone that BMWs were once famous for. It had no need for pops and crackles. That being said, owners who've opted to remove silencers fitted to the exhaust system have been elevated into six-pot nirvana. That the S54 pulls so sweetly through the rev range is almost an added bonus.

The 0-62mph dash in BMW's rear-drive, six-speed Z4 M takes five seconds and top speed is limited to 155mph, so it still provides bonafide sports car performance. At 1.5 tonnes it was not as light as that bodyshape might have suggested, but it doesn't seem particularly out of the ordinary by today's standards (given the current Toyota Supra - effectively a Z4 coupe - is around the same weight).

To drive, the Z4 M was certainly at the lairy end of the spectrum - remember the Top Gear vid where it was deemed akin to a Red Naga chilli - and often firm riding, though these things are often relative. In a safe, sanitised, mollycoddled 2019, perhaps a car that doesn't suffer fools and which can be a bit of a handful might be what everyone needs. It'll be memorable, if nothing else.

So sub-£15k still feels like a great deal, although for the best examples of BMW's two-door we'd be adding a few thousand to the pot. £20k seems like the sweet spot - and it'll likely land you on the advert for today's Spotted, a stunning, well-kept 2006 car with a fair 65,000 miles on the clock. In metallic black with matching black leather inside, plus a set of those lovely lightweight M division 10-spokes, it's as smart a spec we've come across. As a car only a little over a decade old there's sufficient tech on it too - which can't quite be said for the pricier Z3 Ms out there - so it's more than capable of regular use. That being said, even we'd be inclined to suggest keeping this one for fairer days. That modern classic status can't be far off.

Lovely looking things, I followed one into Lincoln this morning and just admired it!

I drove a 3.0si coupe and loved that, felt really pure compared to modern turbo powered cars. I can only imagine that this would take it up a notch or two. I have heard that the gearbox is a bit of a pig though, much like the box in my 335i was I guess.

A Z4m was firmly on my list of options when replacing my 335i, but I ended up going bigger and more V10 powered in the end.

The gearbox can be a little notchy but you soon get used to it.

Lovely cars and would happily have another.

Absolutely love the shape of these. cloud9

I had a Z4M Roadster and I found it an acquired taste to drive though. I wasn't very keen on the gearbox/suspension/ride.

Most of the ingredients are there on paper though, but BMW didn't quite nail the recipe for me.

Clutch Delay Valve delete helped with the Gearbox (especially 1st to 2nd). Also the gearbox improves as it warms up. Real event of a car but servicing can be eye watering.

I think some people may be put off with the £570/year road tax.

For those getting into an "entry level" sports car and stretching finances to get there, surely the tax issue has to play on your mind?

Maybe just me.........

Always wanted one, still do. Was going to buy one a few years back when living in Switzerland, but could find any well looked after cars, so many without the necessary (and free) 1st service (after 5k miles?).

The one dealer handed me the keys to a lovely blue one and told me to take my time but just bring it back with fuel. Had a couple of hours really enjoying it in the Swiss mountains, shame we couldn't do a deal.

In the eye of the beholder and all that, but I really don't like Z3M at all, so Z4 all the way for me.

They are great cars I had a 3.0si manual for a couple of years and recently traded it in for an SLK 55AMG. The only thing lacking in it really was any toys to play with it was rather basic and austere inside and everything was just black. It drove brilliantly handled really well and was reasonably quick. I just fancied a change.

Tax on my 370Z is that amount and I find it annoying and a waste of money to be fair.

When I had my Z4M it also annoyed me so I thought that I may as well get a V8 engine in the same tax bracket...and I swapped it for a V8 M3.

I think you make a good point and I'm guessing that it will put a few off.

I thought that the red seats in mine gave it a bit of a lift, but red is marmite in fairness though.

It was a factor, among others, for me - I ended up buying a 3.0si instead.

The example in the article looks fantastic, now I'm tempted to swap out my brushed aluminium dash etc for a carbon effect one.

Gearbox has a sticker on saying it's Lifetime fill, ignore that, on my E46, an oil change made a positive improvement to the shift quality especially when cold, but to be honest they are a little agricultural. A shorter lever (E46 diesel) and a shorter knob (E60 545i I believe or F10 M5 from the states) made a very positive difference.

These have held their money better than the E46, but as I understand were always more marmite, those that loved them praised them just above the E46, whereas those that didn't, slated them. E46 was pretty universally lauded for handling and balance iirc.

A mate of mine has both an E46 and this Z4m and the startling difference is the sound they make, engine the same, but the exhaust system completely changes the exhaust note, raspy and tinny in the M3, a lot bassier and generally more "BMW I6" in the Z4.

I really liked the carbon effect dash in mine as well. I liked that it was a little bit different. I also like the piano black one but it does mark easily.

Agree with this and I found my Z4M pretty sloppy ride/suspension/chassis wise. The E92 M3 I had after it was night and day different in terms of ride/chassis/suspension.

I find it frustrating that BMW always nail the 3 series but seem to miss the mark with the Z4. I guess sales wise they have to get the 3 series bang on, whereas sales are that small with the Z4 it doesn't matter as much to them.

At the moment I'm debating between Z4 M Coupe and an E92/93 M3. Despite the looks of the Z4, I'm tending to the latter. Seems the better ownership proposition + V8.

IMO, Z4 M Coupe looks best in grey with CSLs. cool
