The Type R supposedly did it on Cup 2 tyres and the roll cage was for safety and just added weight.

Still an impressive lap time for a £31k car with back seats you can actually buy right now.
Maybe you should do your homework as the irony of your post is that the car Honda used to set the record didn’t actually have back seats, which amongst other things were removed to offset the weight of the additional roll cage, so you never have been, and never will be, able to buy the car in the same specification as the one that set the lap time. This may well be exactly the same for any of the other manufacturers attempts of course but then if you are picking a car, or boasting about it, merely based on a manufacturers claimed Nurburgring lap time then you are only going to fool some of the people, some of the time even if you do manage to fool yourself.
Sounds like you’ve got a serious lap time allergy.

Not at all actually, I enjoy reading about/watching the efforts as much as the next person (mainly for the skill of the drivers in the more extreme attempts it has to be said). Unfortunately for your diagnosis you are ignoring the obvious that the prerequisite for having a balanced appreciation of the many of the laps set, and still being able to enjoy them for what they are, is merely the ability not to be naive enough to take them at face value just as the prerequisite for attempting to provide a fact is the ability to make sure that the information provided is actually that, a fact.

A lap time allergy with an associated penchant for pickiness.

Even if that was remotely accurate I'd still happily settle for it over your cognitive allergy with an associated penchant for rank mediocrity.

What do you mean? Renault Sport Meganes have proven extremely reliable, particularly over the past 10 years and despite how aggressively they're driven on track week in week out.

This is not the 80s.
Be fair, after 11 years with my old Megane I had to, er, clean the contacts on one of the electric window switches

Woah hang on an 11 year old car had a minor fault with its electrics and therefore all French cars are have poor electrics.

Heard about the bearing failures, Vanos problems etc in BMW's have you? Many cars have problems but it's so easy and a bit sad in 2019 to with the standard old tired cliche about French cars.
