RE: Audi RS6 Avant | Driven

Having traded out of the previous generation RS6 into a Panamera ST I suspect that I fall into the target demographic for this car. And I love what they've done. The tech looks excellent and they've concentrated on the main failing of the old model- dynamics. The Panamera has FAR better handling, and is really agile through the twisties, whereas the old RS6 is a blunt instrument. The only thing I miss from the RS6 are the looks and the heads up display.
Of course these massively powerful family wagons are an anachronism, but they're a huge amount of fun, and it's the knowledge that whatever the circumstance, you have all that power and grip at your disposal that's so addictive. Five up you can do the same things as when it's just you driving it. As good as it gets for this type of car.
same as 456mgt -- having owned the c7 RS6 as my last car and now in a E63 AMG but also owned in the past BMW M5 and another E63AMG - These are the type of cars I enjoy - but the C7 RS6 is way nicer to look at then this new one. Seriously its bugugly. Didn't he used to write for the Telegraph? It would explain the dreadful and error-strewn prose.
Still does. This piece is a cobbled rehash of the one he did with the Telegraph (which also had pictures of the surfboard on the roof...). So PHers recieve reheated leftovers. Do we matter so little?

I wouldn't dispute the E Class has Q car looks, if you look past the exhausts, but I wouldn't consider it a particularly good looking car.
For me, the C7 RS6 was the best car I've had. It just did everything, and despite being an estate car, I'd still look back and think "Yep, looks the business!". The M5 and E63 tick many of the same boxes, but they can't compete with the looks and the market has proven that.
The C8 now widens that gap. The E63 or M5 is a fine choice if you wish to go under the radar, whereas the Audi is distinctly its own thing. I personally think in the flesh it will have enormous road presence, and for those that can't justify getting a sports car to go alongside their practical daily, the car's appeal will be widened further.
I think looks do matter, especially in this bracket and the Audi nails it for most buyers. The discount deals will be interesting, too soon for the new car but if I was in the market over the next few months I would find it hard to look past the M5 at around £20k less with more toys. For me, the C7 RS6 was the best car I've had. When I start my S205 C63 up at 5:30am or such like and have to wait a minute or so before the temps are up and the gearbox is ready to go the noise is epically antisocial.
That doesn’t sound right, there’s no modern car that you need to do this on. Get in, start the engine, and go.I need to find a replacement for my Model S P100D, and the Audi is very tempting. There are a couple of left-field other choices that I’m lining up against it, including an FF and a Mulsanne Speed, but given how happy my B7 RS4 made me when ai bought it from new the Audi’s probably top of the list at the moment.
The only thing that may put me off is the likelihood of taking delivery of a Taycan next summer. The decision will likely come down to the charging network available for the Porsche.

I drove 600 miles from Eastern Germany to Calais yesterday in my Brabus E63s.
It absolutely gobbled the journey up and was the first time I have done serious Autobahn miles in it - ran out of bravery at 161mph and choked a little on the 17mpg average across the 7 hours.
But .......
Germany is the natural home for these big wagons and frankly other than on acceleration between drops in pace/build ups of traffic my 700bhp was no quicker than anybody else in a big powerful (usually TDi) barge who had the balls to sit at 130-140 (and beyond) for miles on end. That said there is still something really cool (IMO) about the mega estate car with all the power and grip others have mentioned.
Tis new RS6 is a mixed bag visually for me, front looks ace, rear looks ridiculous, exacerbated by the chrome trim.
All that said I'm going to try one out and see what it's like.
This. There comes a point for road cars where a certain amount of power becomes obsolete - imo, anything over 300bhp won't get used to its full potential often enough. A new Skoda Octavia vRS 245 would be 95% as quick over the same 600 mile journey. It absolutely gobbled the journey up and was the first time I have done serious Autobahn miles in it - ran out of bravery at 161mph and choked a little on the 17mpg average across the 7 hours.

But of course I would 100% rather do said journey in a C7 RS6 / F90 M5 / E63s in a higher level of comfort and perhaps a bit more fun

The real factor comes down to safety and how much risk do you want to put yourself and others in on road drive - any car can go fast but to do so safely and consistently is down to the driver. Some are more fun then others for sure.
I find the 4wd cars suit the power that they now have. Had a DB9 and other 2wd cars including various 7's and they were fun but not as easy to drive as the RS6 or E63 etc.
IMHO cars really don't get much more accomplished then the RS6 or E63. I think if your lucky to have one then the key is to add to that garage that's where my itch is being scratched. I don't want to sell my E63 and wish I hadn't my RS6

Had the previous RS6 and loved it. Was hanging on for this one and borrowed a new Avant to see if dog would fit. Sadly it wouldn’t and so we’ve an E63S estate which easily accommodated dog and some luggage. The squarer back on the Merc helps immensely.
Hopefully the chassis changes catch up with the Merc now as it was a blunt instrument with shocking brakes for the performance. E63S almost playful in comparison.
Will say the 9 speed gearbox on the E is worse than the ZF8.
Stuart sorry to piggy back on this chat, I spoke to you last year Re the vectra st200 but I’ve not been able to contact you since. If at all possible I’d love some info or anything you may have on the Vectra st200. My user on here is andybyard. Just sold my B8 RS4 for good money and slapped it down on a new Black vorsprung C8 RS6. Picked the car up and drove it to the Lake District for a few days. The B roads were a little nervy as this thing is big and i really didn't want to scrape the wheels or crack a mirror, but made it out unscathed. Drove it all the way back down south and averaged 25 MPG! The car is stunning to look at (much better in the flesh than any of the pics). It's suberbly comfortable, much more than the old RS4 and is amazingly quiet in eco mode. The gear box isn't the fastest, but is still fine to use in manual. Ferociously fast and very much a "Holy Sh!t I'm already doing xx mph!!!".
I've not really exercised the car just yet, still wanting to bed it in a little but as a daily driver its supremely comfortable and a joy to drive. Going to get it PPF'd on the front, a-pillar, bonnet, mirrors and side skirts as the paint on new cars seems to incredibly thin and non-hard wearing.
Personally, i think it looks better than the E63s and i perfer the MMI to Mercs, but it's just personal preference (i did drive the last gen E63s and it was quite confusing coming from a VAG car).
All in all very happy and can't wait to get over to Europe to fully unleash the beast!
